not sure if Homme is purposely trying to write more inaccessible music/melodies or if his songwriting has just gone to shit. Pretty interesting though. Will have to listen more.

Upon further listens I think the album is really good. Not quite as good as Lullabies To Paralyze or Rated R. Definitely better than Songs For The Deaf and Era Vulgaris. Very dark and moody. Also very diverse sounding. If I Had A Tail and Smooth Sailing are two of the best things Queens have ever done.

Really, really good album. Shows maturity, yet is still exciting and sounds fresh and dark. Exactly the kind of album Josh Homme should be making at 40. Take notes, Belly C.

The moment the hard bit hits in "Kalopsia" is fantastic. "I Appear Missing" is by far their best single since "Little Sister." The band sounds tight as hell. Even with the revolving door of musicians, they keep getting tighter and tighter.

Because they are very American sounding? And you tend to like more British sounding stuff?

it's a "more of the same" album, pretty much, with some stand out tracks (I like Smooth Sailing, If I Had A Tail and I Sat By The Ocean). I like this more than Era Vulgaris. The production/mixing is good too.

ugh i hate it when this is said about music. It's usually a sign that a band/musician is definitely past their prime and that the exciting phase is over.

"followup album by popular mainstream band has a far more mature and tasteful sound than its predecessor" - read: BORING! written by any reviewer fresh out of creativity, just like the album he or she is describing

not that this goes especially for this album, but it all sounds a bit tame and some of the ballads are kind of cringeworthy. Production is really good though, that's an important upside.

The ballads did kind of throw me off. But of course there was also Mosquito Song and I Never Came from earlier albums so I'm not totally surprised. There is just more of them this time.
