I like what you do but I feel like you will ride one idea for two long this could be my aversion to prog but if you hit me with 45 to a minute sound exp sort of forcing yourself to keep moving I would be hitting the repeat button

Just personal preference it may not be what you're going for

i actually really like that he allows his soundscapes to evolve on unconfined terms.

the whole idea of this 'genre' to me (although it kind of eludes straight definition) is getting away from the normal conventions of feeling the need to arrive at a point, only to continue on to the next one. it serves a different purpose than a song that's there to entertain. it's a frame of mind, a tunnel that you go through and it's just, as long as it should be.

justin (mark steve), fwiw i'm still listening to what you post and dig it. in continuation of my unsolicited visual imaging of your stuff, this one conjured the feeling of being adrift in a granular sea of finely coarse static.

i mean i can say that honestly it took me a while to get it, at first when i'd play your stuff i'd think like "is this some kind of trolling", but now that i wrapped my mind around it i really love it for exactly what it is.

I'm not saying construct typical songs the part I appreciate the most is the unique sounds created I'm in it to be surprised

yeah, i get it. sometimes i feel the same when im listening on a superficial level.

but b0lly said it perfectly -- despite the fact that it's sound, it's not necessarily "music," and it isn't meant to fulfill the same general expectations or experiences that songs usually provide, ie entertainment.

the idea i'm going for is to create something of a more immersive experience, something that envelops and carries one through it. maybe that's still entertainment, i dunno; i certainly don't think of it that way when i'm working on it. i'd hope it asks a little more of the listener, and i'd hope that it rewards in return.

not to say that it can't legitimately suck.

and yeah cork_soaker your stuff is great. with ambient music i tend to gravitate to more calming eno/budd-style stuff, but def dig your sounds a lot.

This ones for you Corker. After fussing around much of the day, it was time to engage all the pedals at once:

I am not posting any music rn but I felt the need to tell this here cause previously I posted about picking up the electric guitar again after years of not playing and feeling like I was trying to play a big trout or something. Couldn't even get my fingers to move properly over the neck, it was super disconcerting.

Well I've been playing with this dude for a few months now and we have become pretty musically familiar with each other. My chops have improved a LOT. Yesterday I brought over my amp and my Strat. We fucked around for awhile and then started jamming to this Van Morrison song we learned. It organically became this totally frantic blues/soul freakout and about 10 minutes in I jumped into the deep end, from my usual arpeggiated johnny marr cowboy chords thing into some straight up old school blues leads like I haven't really done in years. I was kind of amazed like are these actually my hands playing this guitar? It just totally clicked and came back to me and I was fucking wailing on that shit like a mother. No effects or nothin', just the Strat into my Peavey cranked up for natural overdrive on the creamy neck pickup.

At the end we made a shit ton of noise and then we looked at each other and he was, "Dude. Hot damn."

Cool - instead of using several garageband dirt pedals you decided to use reverse-delay along with them. I like the fade that happens around 2:36, but it doesn't fade enough imo

The fade at 4:16 is nice too but it doesn't go anywhere else.

If you had some hard instruments maybe the music would have more soul to it, but so far it sounds soulless and arbitrary. Like I'd much rather watch a blacksmith hammering away at horseshoes than watch them come off of an assembly line from a minimum wage worker, you know?

And that's not a dig. Even (especially?) ambient music must have a narrative/point of origin/destination.

I just feel like this music would be more powerful if you were operating within a specific (hard-wired) framework.

Thanks for engaging in a dialogue with me, which is something you obviously do not do with any musical instruments.

i'm not particularly interested in using "musical instruments"

im interested in evocative sound by any means- sound that furthers whatever narrative happens to be unfolding at the time of composition

from my perspective, these pieces are heavily narrative

specific instrumentation, effects, plugins, etc are irrelevant
