oh man that was such a fun night. we went to one of the top clubs in KL (barf) and ended up just dancing like crazy for hours and laughing at all the other weird people there. then we got hot dogs and ran down the street and went and got high. good times.

i have arrived at a solution and it involves, well, staying at home and drinking wine, basically. (if you don't like wine, uh, either ignore this or do what i did and apply the steingarten rule: keep at it until you do. also, it helps a lot if you like cooking)

instead of going out and blowing lots of money in bars, i've been diverting those funds to building up a modest cache of wine. the main draw is that it lifts my evening meals to another level, but it also makes catching up with people much more pleasant. it's way more fun to cook for a friend and share a bottle of wine with him/her than go shout at each other in a loud bar for a few hours.

i didn't really know much so i read some books. perhaps i lack sufficient pride/shame, but i found wine for dummies to be a great starting point. i also got secrets of the sommeliers, which is at the other end of the pretension scale but has better food-pairing suggestions.

they've been doing the job so far. last night we had duck legs, braised in stock with shallots, plus a spinach, tangerine & walnut salad, matched with a cheap-ass burgundy pinot noir i found online a few weeks ago. it was marvellous. screw leaving the house

i sometimes like a bar with a good-old cosy tavern atmostphere. laid-back bartender and maybe a pool table that's barely being used.
i played pool with some drunk americans last summer in Bruges.

lots of these bars are now mostly being ruined by TV screens hanging on the walls.

This. It seems every bar needs to be a sports bar now.

the bar i go to has a huge outside patio where you're waited on. has a variety of patrons and it's not too overpriced for being in a good area. also you can go inside and play pool or galaga or watch sports. normally don't like bars but as the philosopher toby keith once said i love this bar
