Deftones man. Thats the universal stepping stone into heavy music for non-metalheads.

then when hair starts appearing on your testes we'll get you started on a healthy diet of the 'don with maybe a semi-regular rotation of some of the heavier (tackier) end of nu-metal to build up your tolerance to all the usual: breakdowns, blastbeats, atonal guitar solos.

i've loved white pony for years but i just can't take stuff like mastodon seriously :/

it's like heavy for heavy's sake.. almost a parody of itself to me

you might like the new single then, it's hardly heavy

i like heavy for heavy's sake btw. if everything is focused on that, there's nothnig to interfere with the final product.

of course in reality in 99% of the cases it still turns out to be crap

i'll check it out then, when you said it's quite soft i thought you were taking the piss

i'm not saying there's anything wrong with heavy for heavy's sake, i personally just have a block where i can't take it that seriously. i can chuck it on if im drunk and rock out to it but I tend to listen to music while i'm doing design work and stuff, and anything thats crazily heavy like slayer or wanky like dragonforce just distracts me.

well it's not really soft, even for mastodon, i mean they have done acoustic stuff before.

the new single is still rocky and heavy-ish, just not crazy heavy. middle of the road for mastodon.

the song that got me into mastodon was naked burn, from leviathan. might help the people looking for a way into the heavy stuff - it's really melodic. after that it didn't take long for the rest of the album to catch on, and then their other releases...

They do have great melodies and that's one of the elements that got me into them.
