I see where you're coming from. I used to despise them. I like them now, but their drooling legion of cock-sucking hipster doofuses still pisses me off.
AGREED. FUCK THAT SHIT. especially that new song about coke. so stupid. I'll say Guns n Roses and all that stupid bullshit (poison, etc). Never really listened to Kiss Metallica has some good songs but their sound doesn't change much Kind of surprised to see Pink Floyd on here. I guess if you didn't smoke weed in high school, there's a chance you won't like them (sort of joking on stereotypes here but not completely). I can see how they could be perceived as boring but they're still one of my favorites. Quote:
Joy Division and Slint aren't for everybody but they're among my favorites. I just got into the Pixies in the last year or two, but if you've heard them I can't see how you wouldn't like them. Did I see the Clash on here? They're fucking awesome! |

I know, but I could say 'there are arguments' in favour of any point I wanted to make but that deosn't mean there are any good ones.

on a musical level: the album makes great use of atmosphere. parts of the album are bathed in a very pretty overdriven fuzz (holland, 1945), some parts which make great and tasteful use of brass (the fool), some parts which are front loaded with treble (in the aeroplane over the sea), some parts which are stripped down completely with a lot of empty spaces (oh comely), and some parts which manage to have two or more of these things going on simultaneously (untitled)...and regardless of what type of atmosphere is being employed on a track-to-track basis (or in some cases, a second-to-second basis), it always sounds like the right choice, and the transitions between these varying atmospheres is extremely well done. the result is a sound that's fairly unique despite its use of several familiar elements. i love the mix of instruments as well...it's a good mix of old-timey (the brass and the occasional use of organ or bagpipes) and modern (guitar, keyboard, obvious use of distortion, etc). as far as lyrics and content go, and the emotional weight the album carries: it's no secret that a lot of the inspiration for the album stems from the holocaust; jeff magnum has mentioned anne frank specifically, iirc, and rightfully so...because despite the overwhelmingly bleak and sad subject matter of the album, there is this sort of starry-eyed, youthful optimism which manages to shine through at different points, and in a very realistic, tasteful, powerful, non-overstated, non-tacky way (you know, the exact opposite of that abysmal "alive with the glory of love" song by say anything). as a result, the reprisal of "two-headed boy" about two-thirds of the way through the final track is one of my favorite "..holy shit" moments in all of music. the lyrics are abstract--there's no way to get around it--and this is probably one of the biggest hurdles as far as liking the album goes...but honestly, i've never found them to be overly vague or distracting in the least. there are certainly small sections where i don't have the slightest fucking clue what he's talking about or referring to, but the same could be said about damn near any other musician at some point or another. it might just be an acquired taste thing, or one of those things that some people just don't "get" (and i don't mean "get" in any sort of elitist, you're just not on my level maaaan kind of way). honestly...just listen to it with headphones on from beginning to end and pay close attention. if it doesn't hit you the first time through, give it another shot in a few days. if you still don't feel anything, i guess it's just not for you. i think i succeeded in explaining my position, but i definitely failed at not sounding like a douchebag. i apologize. i just don't understand how being liked by a certain subculture can detract from the music itself

I seem to recall something said about artists that are highly regarded amongst pre-teens.
