I don't understand this view point. Ogilala bores me to tears. I listened to it 3 times and nothing about it interests me at all.

Like Mals was saying, those songs are bittersweet and all have elements of sadness and depression... Completely different vibe from his purposely positive music.

ok so they aren't pure happiness in a bottle (except autumn nocturne), but they are uplifting songs. so what are we arguing about again?

to me, Monuments is much, much worse than either Zeitgeist or Oceania.

you are still listening to 90s alt rock and cheesy 80s metal as your primary thing tho, so

I also don't really hear Corgan's newer music being "happy" in its uber-vanilla God is cool la la la la la ohh ohh ohh approach to songwriting and utterly bland, hollow delivery. It just feels like music that is about nothing. Like music made by some guy trying to say something profound but who actually does not even have emotions or something. it's more like "dead inside", than happy.

Not true, little guy.

And plus, Luna's one of the weakest songs on S.D... No way in hell it's one of Billy's better songs.

It's all music based in positivity... That's the fulcrum behind why the music isn't as good.

He's made a cognizant effort to avoid writing depressing music... It started with Zwan... But even Zwan seems dark compared to a lot of his newer work.

Oceania has a few exceptions I guess (Violet Rays is the one song that jumps out... which is probably why it's one of the better reformation tracks), but he doesn't make angry or depressing music anymore, that much is a fact.

Pay attention to the thread... You're not focusing. You're jumping in randomly and hollering opinions but you're missing the context of the conversation.

Reprise said that Billy had written a lot of good happy songs, and I asked her to name some... Most of the songs she named I wouldn't consider happy... Luna arguably would be the one that is the most so, but it's one of the shittiest songs of the era, so it doesn't help her argument any.

fuzzy you are just being an idiot. quit while you're ahead for once. you've now painted yourself into a corner where the only way what you are saying makes sense is if one of your premises is that "Luna is not a good song"

which is LUNAcy

Ehhh, it's always been a song I skip a lot...

It's definitely better than his new positive music, that much is obvious.

I just don't think it's a niche that Billy does well and he's been on record several times over the years saying it's a cognizant effort to only make art based in "light".

I was thinking this, too.

I also want to give Z another chance. I actually liked about half of it when it came out. (Still think For God and Country was 1000% better acoustic-based than the album version. That was a BIG miss on Bill's part.)

In my dream world, Billy would have used a different moniker for his music 2007 on and I would be 100% okay with letting it just be that. Putting the SP name on it is one of his biggest blunders.

I get that other bands switch members and retain the name but SP isn't other bands.

Just pretend he did use a different moniker. The music will magically sound better.

It's hard for me to sit back and judge SP 88-00 music on whether it was "happy" or not because the songs made me happy. I always took his lyrics as abstract and I was able to put my feelings into them and make them mean what I wanted them to mean.
