This is exactly how a lot of people reacted to the whole Mary, Star Of The Sea album, to be polite about it. Thing is, MSOTS is the disappointing studio result after like two years of amazing live performances. Look up the Glass House or the Hideout sessions.

I wasn't around at the time but there was apparently some kind of poll to find out what songs they'd been playing live that people would have liked to appear on the album, and the results were just thrown out in favor of what BC wanted. It's not exaggerating to say that MSOTS is largely composed of the songs few people cared about, like the bottom 5%. Zwan is best experienced in bootleg form rather than the overloud, badly mastered hippy love-in bullshit-fest that was presented. I only learned that over the past few years.

I was far away from BC-land around that time so up until a few years ago I had no idea about the great stuff that was out there. It's nice to no longer look at Zwan as "that shit hippy side project BC did nobody cared about". It's sad - the stuff he was writing around that time was really inspired and could have been the start of something really special.

Start with Glass House and just go from there.

it is just a private comment system, in essence. it is linked to 'points' and the system keeps track of a total but it's hidden from everyone. the only way you can tell is that only people with positive points can leave green colored rep, but it's still the same process for anyone who wants to leave pos or neg rep.

also people are going to neg rep you for talking about rep. it's an old joke. i would do it but you can't leave rep for the same user twice in a row

okay, so:

1. I like the older music better. I see myself enjoying some tracks off Oceania, and only one track off MTAE (One And All) every once in a while. I fully enjoy music they've made up till Machina II. Even Zeitgeist was good imo, but it wasn't as great as pre-2001 SP. I forget that American Gothic exists sometimes haha. TBK was... well, I don't really know what to say. I enjoyed Freak, Tom Tom and Spangled, but otherwise, nothing special. I've already told you about MTAE and Oceania.

Honestly, the whole "lover" thing BC had going for him post-2007, didn't really resonate with me.

I heard some tracks from Zwan. I'm yet to listen to some more stuff. I found Honestly a little cheesy hahahah. First Zwan track I heard, that is. To conclude, pre-2000 SP made the most memorable music. It'll stay with me forever. Can't say the same thing for some of the later records.

2. Aaah. Tough one. Very tough one. A lot of their albums are more or less tied for me. Sigh. I'll give it a shot anyway:

a)Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie
b)Machina II
c)Gish
d)Machina/TAFH
e)PI/Adore/Earphoria(?)
f)Oceania/Zeitgeist
g)MTAE

well, that's the best I can do as of now lol.

3. I've listened to TheFutureEmbrace and Ogilala, yep. And I've already mentioned Zwan in the first answer. I don't have any problems with Ogilala, actually. I liked it. Of course, liquid, shredding on guitar Bill > acoustic guitar peaceful Bill (not to say I don't like the latter, it's just that I like the former more )
TFE was cool. It wasn't GREAT, so to speak, but I enjoy it every once in a while. I particularly likes Sorrows, off it.

Did I answer your question adequately?
yeah man, good job. I like Sorrows from TFE also; he played it live on the plainsong tour and it was dope

as for the zwan album, there are some stinkers but the best songs imo are really good - endless summer, desire, and the title track. i also like yeah! and ride a black swan. the rest are bad to meh. but yeah, unreleased zwan is awesome. some really good ones are everything cast a stone, riverview, revolve, the shining path, think you know, love lies in ruin, a new poetry, chrysanthemum, for your love, ring the bells. somehow they don't sound like SP but they are still great, not sure how he pulled that off

my list would probably be like (all inclusive, only proper albums [except for teargarden]): sd > mcis > machina II > adore > gish > machina > tfe > mary star > ogilala > zeitgeist > oceania > teargarden > mtae

unreleased zwan is probably up there after adore. sd is not really better than mcis, but it's a perfect album, which is why i put it higher. mcis has some novelty songs that i often skip.

as far as bootlegs, yeah it was fun. i started off buying 'imports' in record stores (pressed CDs of bootlegged tapes), soon started trading tapes. I had probably about 50. I remember when I first got mashed potatoes on tape and a bunch of rare b-sides and pre-gish material. i printed out lyrics to everything before i got it. i really liked purr snickety and that's one of the first songs I used to learn how to do doublestop fingerpicks (idk if that's what they are called. basically plucking two strings at once, one with pick one with finger). i dont even remember if that's how he does it on record but that's how i taught it to myself. i even played it live at a teen cabaret thing i was part of. that and porcelina, lol. i wonder if there's a vhs floating around of those. the company that put the shows on is still around.

I thought Table of Contents had launched an all out Baphomet Cocksucker/Pedo Elite/Reptilian Overlord assault in revenge for his eternal banishment.

Goddamn paranoia.
