i guess i could get why people don't get the aggressive electronic drums, and it might sound dated to them. but i absolutely love the production on that song - i think it's perfect. the pounding electronics that gel with this vague modulation track, that sounds like keyboard but is probably (james') guitar. and then you have this great guitar hook with the 'it came from your thoughts' part, and then james' little feedback/ebow squeals that serve the song so well. and billy's ADT vocals at the front. great stuff.

i really do think that Adore was the one record where James is in absolute full blow. after so many years of listening, i think i can pick out his contributions to most tracks with considerable accuracy, and his work on that record is so beautifully subtle and understated, yet it's easily responsible for a good 40% of what makes the best moments on the album work so well.

i'm kinda surprised to see it's not so well liked here. it's so fucking gut wrenching and unusually straightforward/honest, coming from the master of trickery and rhymes. 'mother, i hope you know that i miss you so'. brutal

i mean, i get that there are weak moments on Adore. i agree.

but when you get past that dragging first half of the record, and start coming up on Appels and onwards, something just turns magical and the record becomes so strong and cohesive. even the songs that aren't as good, suddenly work surprisingly so well due to context. and annie-shame-behold-martha-blank page, that entire chunk so fucking strong and profoundly rattling.

man, i'm still fanboying like crazy about this album all those years later.
i dunno man, i just really love it. always have. there's just something special about it for me. i guess it's called being a saddo.

100% agreed on James' work. Lots of beautiful touches that fit with the vibe of the record perfectly

And so much great stuff on the reissue too. There's this amazing ebow solo at the end of a version of Dusty

Appels + Oranjes is fucking excellent and i have not, can not, & will not ever understand why people actually claim to hate that one let alone dislike it

i do like appels + oranjes, but i seriously dislike the way Tear sounds. i'm frankly surprised at its popularity. and a lot of the lyrics in blank page are beyond reasonable cringe.

Oh great we’re doing ideal tracklistings

To Sheila
Perfect
Daphne Descends
Appels & Oranjes
Waiting
Dusty (one of the demos from the deluxe set is best)
Behold! the Night Mare
Pug
Once in a While
For Martha
Blissed & Gone
LMGTWY

Would it have been a hit? Doubtful! But at least the laborious wallowing is kept to a minimum. Chose Pug over Ava Adore. Can’t stand the “you’ll always be my whore” line now, knowing B0lly - and neither have aged well.

As with all things Crogan; it needs to be edited down. Tear is a classic example of this. The first couple of minutes the song is great but from there it drags. They should hit the breakdown in the middle, build the song back up and hit the post around minute 4. Jamming it out on the live version is fine, even the wonky mad man piano shit. But you really don't need another epic on the album when you've got for Martha.

The machina tour version of tear is great because it is pared down and shorter. And going from tear to crestfallen is a slog. They should have put once in a while in its place. Appels and oranjes I always thought should have been their entrance music to the stage. It should have been on a soundtrack or something. Once upon a time should have been edited down a little and made a single over crestfallen. I mean how many times does he say who am I in it?

I agree with others that waiting sounds more like a machina II track. The drum loop is a discounted adore leftover. But it's great tune. Adore was great.
The first 5 songs he was clearly stacking them up as singles.

Best thing about Adore is how it ends. Shame-Nightmare-Martha-Page is the best four song sequence in tsp's catalogue.

once upon a time is a sweet song. but apples and oranges is so awkward and doofusticated. bleurgh! and live tears fucking slay (tho garson blows).

It's really good. But To Sheila might just be the bestest evar!

Listening to that live Tear Ram posted made me want to revisit Adore. So dark.

this and For Martha are the two songs from Adore that I genuinely really like and often return to.

I'd just like to say that this is Netphoria, so it's probably well understood that everyone here is a wanker.

Yes! Except Adore is gorgeous. It really is. Billy + emotional distress, relationship issues, and death = genius. Struggling with divorce and the death of your mother is hardcore. I agree with the statements about production and this being the first signs of the wheels coming off for the Pumpkins, but it feels like Adore was the last time he truly looked inward and expressed it in music. After Adore it could be argued that he was trying to hard, but on this album I feel he was trying to deal with huge feelings through music. There is also something to be said for the Jimmy thing. I really think Billy feels disadvantaged or exposed without Jimmy though he would never outright admit it. Just like the amazing tour with the hard rock interpretations of the album, a big part of why they were so good is Billy taking it all on himself and proving he can do it. I think this was a time where it worked. But yeah, shrooms, hash, and occasional ecstasy is where it's at for SP music.
