Default Has anyone here been a fan long enough to remember the shaving of the head?

I bet it was ~wacky~ when Billy looks like a gaunt drug addled baby (not baby aj tho) instead of fair haired indie darling all of a sudden

I did not specifically see it when it happened. I did not watch SNL, and footage of the band was hard to come by outside music videos and the occasional MTV update. I would have to assume my first exposure came from the "1979" or "Zero" music video. I remember thinking it was just a weird fad that would pass, especially considering they drew him with hair on The Simpsons, but here we are 21 years later.

I remember seeing the snl broadcast live and remarking on the excessive eyeliner and makeup he was wearing more than the bald head.
SP going glam? made sense with a double album. SP wasn't grunge and it was obvious billy wanted to separate himself from the pack.

Why "fair haired?" He was naturally brown haired and actually dyed it black during Mellon Collie early press stuff.

Yeah, I was into the band and into SNL so I remember being surprised. The weird part was how prominent his eyebrows were in that performance.

I remember seeing the 1979 video when it was new and thinking what the fuck!?

Did anyone think that he looked cooler with the bald head? At the time I remember no one liking it.

Yeah I remember seeing them on SNL in October 95' and being shocked that he had shaved his head. You could also tell he was on something during that performance.

yeah it was ~wacky~, but mostly weird. just like if you turned on SNL next week and Dave Grohl shaved his head and was bald. Totally unexpected, and distracting at first. Didn't know what to make of it. I remember looking at the TV with a confused look on my face, and then by the end of the song, i was over his clean shavenness . But then the Zero persona was soon ingrained in our heads, and it just became part of his identity. From that point on he always wore the zero shirt, so he became a sort of character, separate from full-head-of-hair Billy. there became a point where he could not grow back his hair, it would have been too weird. and ~wacky~.

at the time I assumed he'd just grow it back eventually after he was done with the character. But come Adore in 1998, it seemed clear that he was going to keep it that way, and there was enough talk about him going/being bald that it seemed like the reasonable thing to do - I guess.

his hair was super thin

But the fact that he went bald as a cue ball was the shocking part. He could have just shaved it short with a longer attachment and no one would have really been shocked.

I think he saw the writing on the wall as far as his hairline went and just decided to shave it bald so he could posture that he "could grow his hair back if he wanted to, but he's making a statement" type of bullshit.

Something I've been thinking about since reading "fair haired indie darling" in this thread title

Corgan was my first exposure to the indie type artist even though he wasn't indie at all.

I'm talking about the ugly sweater wearing goofy guy hunched over his piano in his house

Song like "Lily" and "We only Come out at Night" were not classic rock they were a total different animal from what I knew

he just didnt want to look old. there is nothing cool or fashinable about losing your hair in your 20s so he shaved it. image is important to the pumpkins, always has been.

This was the original appeal of SP. In the wake of "grunge music" which was maybe suppose to be alernative and embrace feminist ideals, billy actually sort of did that, for a time.

that's what, imo, always pushed sp away from other grunge bands - was the masculine vs feminine dynamic
