I listened to Shiny last night and I think it starts off quite well. On my proper hi-fi system it sounds quite impressive at times but I feel more dynamic range would benefit the music, especially the drums. The last couple of tracks left virtually no impression, however, and it seemed to end suddenly and I was thinking, "is that it?"

maybe your hi-fi is broken? is that why it ended suddenly?

band checks reactions to "album" online.

jimmy roaring with laughter
james and jeff giggling
billy looking dead serious: "my jokes are no laughing matter"
mindy strawberry tweeting how amazing it was to work with the talented billy again

Curious if NIN is so much bigger than SP why they have 3 million less Spotify listeners and half the plays even on his biggest song Closer?

I suppose having people listen to more than just your 90s hits is just a nasty side effect of continuing to make good music after your initial peak moment

in any case, I'm sure Trent isn't losing too much sleep over that number difference when the trade-off is not having to hear "Why don't you sing in your 90s voice?" after every subsequent release

First impressions after one quick listen.

POP... it's just so much pop music. It works well for Silvery Sometimes, but other than that it's all basically the opposite of why I've liked SP. It's Billy's concept album for, "We're here, we're back! We're reunited and happy! You see our smiles??"

There seems to be a lot of love for Marchin' On. To me it sounds like what a token heavy metal band would play on a made for TV Disney movie.

Who knows. I'll force myself to give it a more thorough listen once it comes out.

I made a playlist on Spotify a while back with the best tracks from the 3 NIN ep’s. Shame it wasn’t released as an album cause I do agree it’s some of his best work in years. I’m actually a fan of the band it’s just too easy to get ninsp worked up about his boy

I feel a strange affinity with ninsp; both of those bands are my all-timers and it's hard to choose which I like more. I think classic SP is of unimpeachable quality pretty much front to back. Trent has never quite convinced me that everything he touches could be perfect the way Billy did in the 90s, but his later career smashes SP 2.0 to pieces. Hesitation Marks and the EP trilogy are both fucking fantastic in my book, especially the trilogy.

SP:

Gish: 8
SD: 10
MCIS: 9 (I personally like it more than SD, but if I'm looking at it more objectively, SD is just pristine while MCIS has its rough edges)
Pisces: 8
Adore: 9
Machina I: 7
Machina II: 8

Zeitgeist: 5
TbK: 1 (Can't believe someone as talented as Billy put this shit out. There are garbage ass, absolute amateur local bands I know of that sound better than TbK)
Oceania: 6
Monuments: 4 (Great on first impression, but a total shell of an album. I like it less every time I hear it.)

Shiny: 7

PHM: 7
Broken: 8
TDS: 8
TF: 9
WT: 6
YZ: 8
Ghosts: 5 (but I still love he did this and listen to my favorite selections with some regularity)
Slip: 7.5 (highly underrated; the musical/lyrical arc on this is insanely captivating and seems allegorical to the arc of his career up to that point, even if the songs on their own aren't great)
HM: 8/10 (one of my most listened to NIN albums these days)
Trilogy: 9/10

I think if that were really true they would have selected it as a single. I agree that most all eight songs sound like an attempt to get into the pop rock charts, probably not unrelated to supposed financial struggles with his pro wrestling venture (he sued them for a lot of money, which tells me he lost a lot of money). Musically it has the most "going on", I'd not trash talk it just in the hopes that BC gets the message and stays on that groove.

marchin' on sounds like a fuck you from corgan to people who want to hear his old voice and sound. it's empty as fuck. she stabs the empty clock? what?

sounds good despite all that but i dont think SP is going to be going in this direction and i wouldn't want them to

Marchin' On is the first song since... well probably since As Rome Burns which captures that kick-in-the-balls, sneering, in-your-face down and dirty rock that made most people love this band. It is an "empty" song. No songwriting going on whatsoever. But holy shit when it goes into the final part and there is the James Iha noise guitar thing going on, it sounds like some badass long last jam from the Machina era or something. I think it sounds like the band sat down and was like let's just fucking jam and wrote this song in 2 hours and had a great time doing it, and in a way that makes me feel like it's the best song on the album.
