Many of my producer and songwriter friends swore by the ATH-M50Xs. So I decided to pick em up since I was able to save 15% on em and get em for only $125 (normally around $150-160). And man, do they frigging sound amazing. I gave my old Sony DJ headphones to my girl, which eventually broke after years of abuse and traveling for shows. So I picked up a pair of Audio Technicas and she was blown away.

Price isn't everything ::cough:: Beats ::cough:: Sure, there are some more expensive, great headphones out there, like Sennheiser. But $125-150 ain't that expensive for amazing sounding headphones. Most regular in store headphones have their own built in EQs to make them "sound better." So it's better to go for noise canceling studio headphones like Audio Technica that try not to alter the signal like studio monitors.

For playback, I use my Roland MX-1 mixer/audio interface that can handle 24/96 instead of my laptop's internal sound card. But that's a bit of money and much more than what non-music producers would need. For regular music listeners, you can find decent 24 bit DACs for around $150-200. There's cheaper DACs for under $100, but most top out at 16/48.

my ears are ruined anyway. i don't think i'm able to hear any difference between anything.

but sure, i'll take your 24 bits. i've brought two plastic bags. i reckon that should be enough to carry them home.

Someone asked Billy about this at one of the Q&A sessions before one of the Pumpkins/Manson shows in 2015. I don't recall exactly what he said, but it was not anything that interesting. He put them in as a joke. I think he said he expected people to figure them out eventually, but was surprised and impressed at how quickly people noticed them.

It's amazing how he both underestimates and overestimates his core fanbase. Actually he's just out of touch with his fanbase.

Highlight for me was the Jupiter's Lament Barbershop version, which was originally supposed to be the "flagship song" on MCIS he talked about since the mid-90s.

Did he actually? Do you have the quote? This sounds insane. Its a 7.0/10 song at best.

From the booklet

Quote:
for this was intended to be the centre piece of the album. the flagship song, if you will. in the early steps of our journey I shared my vision of the album with Flood and it was all going splendidly until i shared this particular vision with him.

"are you insane ??" he asked.

insane? not i. for i was inspired by van halens "show your love". all that fire and swagger building up and up, climaxing in.. bop baaa da shooby doo wop!. that glorious, beautiful prayer to nonsense. my favorite moment on VH1. perhaps my favorite moment of VH period. nobody does that. "because it's stupid. it's a gimmick", said he. we recorded it but there was no way Flood was going to let it go on the record. tis a shame and something i should've fought for.

The only place I could see "Jupiter's Lament" fitting in on the album would be in place of "Take Me Down," but I think having a James song provides a nice reprieve from the first part of the album before jumping into some of the heavier songs on the second part.
