One of my old school friends uploads a simple photo of himself and it receives more likes in 10 hours than a photo (to raise "breast cancer awareness") of a topless lesbian family friend of mine in 23 hours.
I'm not pointing this out because "Y U NO LIEK TOPLES LESBIN" but I just find the comparison of social phenomenons here kind of fascinating. There is nothing at all intrinsically interesting, special or significant about a picture of someone. As a social phenomenon it's existed for as long as there have been people who can draw or paint or sculpt portraits of themselves and others. Whereas people don't always ascribe every photo that they take to a movement, and regardless of that movement being misguided, that makes a photo more interesting than a simple picture of someone, at least to me. It's all narcissism in the end. |

it's just to show you that popularity contests never die, banal pictures and comments from popular people always get a great response on facebook

it's funny because i thought we all came to realize that nobody likes pictures of food but if a popular person posts it, it gets 30 likes and comments like mMM looks so good!!!

A topless picture to raise awareness of breast cancer sounds pretty annoying
We are all aware of breast cancer at this point |

That's what it was, she was also topless, covering her nipples with her hands.
Which reminds me of another weird anomaly of Western culture surrounding the nipple. A topless female can be broadcast on TV with stickers covering her nipples and areola and it's not considered nudity, but as soon as they are revealed, everyone loses their minds. I'd like to see the reactions to a woman wearing a full-body burqa, but with two holes cut out to expose just their nipples. |

I hate when it's like "do this or you/loved one will DIE!!!1"
I don't use my fb much, and it is ok when people use it for pictures of a drunken weekend/weird people getting engaged/having kids, cause that's part of the social aspect for which fb was designed. Now I don't understand much because half my feed is filled with useless buzzfeed articles, some 30% is political stuff which I see all day anyway, 15% real people sharing real things, and 5% bands spamming me. I only use fb for the private groups/messages. |

Let's talk about how a group of dudes got an oval shaped ball from one end of a field, past another group of guys, and through to the other side of the field.
