Two fans of the particular brand of indie rock that SXSW provides are dead.
I mean
There's no hell, so... |

Literally the worst after-tragedy article in the history of life.

"But the problem now is that everyone’s fought so long for the rights of the individual that it’s finally gotten through to the other side, and individualism got mutated and went all out of control. And now it’s just out-and-out selfish shit, where the rights of the individual have blended with capitalism and made for a really ugly society. Punk rock was part of it.” He sighs dejectedly. “Individualism sounded like the most amazing thing, but now everyone’s just out for themselves.”

i mean it's sad but he's so right about punk rock...but i would say it was co-opted the Man said "This is dangerous, how do we assimilate it?" the Man said "Well they are all about individuality and independence aren't they?" the Man said "Oh, why of course. All cornerstones of the Capitalist illusion." |

My takeaway on that particular comment (and from reading other interviews) about punk rock was that he was referring to how in its early inception it championed the idea of the individual, not in reference to how it's been co-opted into something less than authentic in modern times. That particular sentence had a weird placement and is kind of confusing. I blame that on it being an interview taking snippets of a longer conversation.
Unless I'm totally reading you wrong or it wrong. What I'm trying to say is that I think you can take that little sentence about punk rock out and not lose any meaning of the rest of the blurb. The part about punk only confuses it some. |

no i think that early in its inception and continuing throughout it generally champions "individuality" but i think it should be more about breaking the status quo
i don't think it was co-opted by back room deals, but capitalism is going to sell the product on the values that support capitalism which is individualist consumerism. you know, buy this stuff and be unique like everyone else |

Absolutely.
I think the overall point, specifically referring to punk, was that it was originally responsible for championing individuality (and going against the status quo) and here we are decades later where everyone is championing 'individuality' (lifestyle branding) and it sucks now. Because of the reasons you've stated. |

well it dovetails neatly into my socialist bent, this post-industrial consumer capitalism is all about buying things to make yourself an individual, your clothes, your car, your music, your cell phone and all its apps, wallpapers and such...
sometimes it feels like this generation is fighting hard to not have anything in common with anyone else |

what bands you like is some kind of value judgement on your personal character, so everyone gets super defensive about their musical choices and think it's relevant to mention in an article of people at SXSW killed by a drunk driver that you like blur a lot
i mean i can't believe this hasn't happened before, this town is wasted and driving all the time and SXSW is just a clusterfuck of the most delirious kind |

Did the guy crash into the front of a building or did he hit a bunch of people who were running around in the streets/crossing when they shouldn't have been? Or possibly swerved to avoid hitting someone in the street and ended up hitting people in the front of a building? I'm sure there's more to it than "drunk driver slays pedestrians".
Just curious because I know that when there are mass gatherings of people on foot they do not obey traffic signals/crossing lights at all. |
