falling down? the "Broken Windows" themed revenge film?

I always thought Phone Booth was a silly gimmick

Michael Douglas's character in Falling Down is a stand in for white rage. He lashes out at Asians, Latinos, black people, etc. cause he thinks he's lost his white privilege. It was released after the LA Riots. It's awful.

Nah, never read it that way. He also lashes out at an old white golfer, construction workers, fast food employees...he loses it because he's simply tired of the million inconveniences life throws in one's way and just snaps.

Whatever you think his motivation is, the movie certainly doesn't paint him as sympathetic in the least. He's bound and determined to reunite with a daughter he has no right to see.

You're not supposed to empathize with him.

Oh yeah and there's a part where he straight up shoots a white supremacist store owner

The main character is a white man lashing out because of his perceived loss of privelge in society. It came at the end of the Reagan/Bush years and right after the LA Riots.

It was a modern retelling of countless other white man revenge films. Except instead of his wife or daughter being murdered or raped it's his white ego that he's going vigilante over

Anyway, I suspect it turns out that Michael Douglas is actually the baddie in Falling Down and that the story was not meant to endorse his behavior so much as condemn it.

Sergeant Prendergast: Let’s meet a couple of police officers. They’re all good guys.

Bill Foster: I’m the bad guy?

Prendergast: Yeah.

Bill Foster: How did that happen? I did everything they told me to. Did you know I build missiles?

Prendergast: Yeah.

Bill Foster: I help to protect America. You should be rewarded for that. Then they give it to the plastic surgeon. You know, they lied to me.

Prendergast: Is that what this is about? You’re angry because you got lied to? Is that why my chicken dinner is drying out in the oven? Hey, they lie to everybody. They lie to the fish! But that doesn’t give you any special right to do what you did today.

Mike Doug' is essentially outed as a would-be Trump voter and effectively commits suicide as soon as that sinks in.

Didn't he do one of those John Grisham movie adaptations with Mathew McConaughey? Not the one with the car. Well, I think it had a car in it, but this one had McConaughey defending this guy who avenged the murder of his daughter by Klansmen.
