yes, I bent them from 16 gauge fence top rails using a pipe bending tool. each hoop is two 10 foot rails, with the ends bolted into 48" long ground posts that were driven about 24" deep. We are doing 'raised' beds inside, basically just 6 inches of new compost laid over the ground. Same thing we use in our main garden next door.

The ground it sets on is bottom land on the edge of a wetland area and is pretty good for gardening.

how did planting directly into the compost go? i like to till it in so the roots can get to the soil and the compost in the same place. also then i dont need to buy as much compost, which is the main thing. what do you use for compost? only time i plant directly to compost is if i add just an inch or so to give me a nice seedbed for direct seeding.

Well, you do need a good amount of compost to start with. i am going to use a No Till system. The current garden has a lot of weeds. And the greenhouse tunnel is going in a spot we've not cultivated before. So we covered the garden in a 2000 sq ft silage tarp this winter to kill the weeds. When i build beds in the hoop house I'll lay down a layer of cardboard on top of the ground, which will smother the weeds. Then I'll build the new beds with fresh compost. we're going to get 27 yards of compost in March.

I probably could just till it all and add an inch of compost instead... but i want to do everything I can to eliminate and suppress weed growth.

the garlic i put in our first all compost bed is looking really good. we planted it around Thanksgiving and it's 8 inches tall now. We are using compost from a municipal composting program. It's good quality and cheap and only a mile away. But i am adding bone meal and kelp meal to most of the beds as we build them

weeds are gonna weed. i just hoe that shit up. no till is a cult. certainly one can overtill, but tilling is great if used properly. many no till systems rely on insane amounts of compost coming in which is expensive and not sustainable. id consider getting a little tiller. broadforking can help mitigate the concerns with forming hardpan, and has other great benefits anyway. i broadfork and till each bed once every 3rd crop-ish, depending on conditions. i broadfork in between each crop, unless i am feeling lazy.

do you worry abt chemicals coming in from city municipal waste? i use mushroom compost which is mostly chicken shit and straw, and it gives me some peace of mind that it was already labelled safe for food to grow in, even if it's not "organic."

i'm expanding the garden this year and will be happy to have enough space to build more soil with cover crop. i think that shit, and grazing, are the best ways to be sustainable/low input. but you need enough space to be able to fallow some of your growing land.

i am broadforking the beds. Luckily our ground is not too badly compacted. I am a little worried about what might be in the compost... but i don't think it is much worse than most of what is available. What we are using is sold in this region under a commercial brand name. We're able to get it locally much cheaper in bulk.

We probably won't buy anymore compost after the new beds are build. we have two yards of new compost in the works aready, using waste from the garden, leaves, and food scraps. In the spring we intend to get 8-12 chickens, and we'll use their bedding to make more compost. in the future when we replenish beds we'll have our own homemade compost to use.

I get what you are saying about No Till being a cult. It can get that way. But that is not me. I simply want to get a fresh start with the new beds. And I want to be able to cultivate efficiently... as well as flip beds throughout the year quickly and easily.

Also, i have the hand tools i need to do "market garden" style beds. Like rakes, stir-up hoes, broadfork, etc.

i'm excited to get this hoop house done so I can start working on a new 7' deer fence for around our garden, and building a new Chicken run adjacent to our beds.

I also just got a microgreen rack but haven't had time to set it up and get started with growing indoors

awesome sounds like a lot of fun. DM me if you have any questions or want to talk through strategies. I was doing pretty much exactly what you're doing now 5 years ago and have learned a lot by fucking stuff up.

after a racking up an embarrassing number of youtube self-hair-cutting tutorial views, and following a fair amount of nervous hesitation, i went for it

was expecting moderately disastrous results, but actually it was fine
