Default Third Eye Blind

ok, so one of my first voyages into the world of rock, was the first Third Eye Blind record when i was around 13. i really liked it back in the day, but sometime after that i got into Adore pretty hard, and the rest is - unfortunately - history.

since then though, I'd always thought of that TEB record as the type of bollocks you listen to when you have no idea. but recently i've been revisiting some of that stuff, and let me tell you - they're not half bad.

tell me this is not a great song

"Motorcycle Drive By"

Summer time and the wind is blowing outside
In lower Chelsea and I don't know
What I'm doing in this city
The sun is always in my eyes
It crashes through the windows
And I'm sleeping on the couch
When I came to visit you
That's when I knew I could never have you
I knew that before you did
Still I'm the one who's stupid
And there's this burning
Like there's always been
I never been so alone
And I've never been so alive
Visions of you on a motorcycle drive by
The cigarette ash flies in your eyes
And you don't mind, you smile
And say the world doesn't fit with you
I don't believe you, you're so serene
Careening through the universe
Your axis on a tilt, you're guiltless and free
I hope you take a piece of me with you
And there's things I'd like to do
That you don't believe in
I would like to build something
But you never see it happen
And there's this burning
Like there's always been
I've never been so alone
And I've, I've never been so alive
And there's this burning
There is this burning
Where's the soul I want to know
New York City is evil
The surface is everything but I could never do that
Someone would see through that
And this is our last time
We'll be friends again
I'll get over you, you'll wonder who I am
And there's this burning
Just like there's always been
I've never been so alone alone
And I've, and I've never been so alive
So alive
I go home to the coast
It starts to rain I paddle out on the water
Alone
Taste the salt and taste the pain
I'm not thinking of you again
Summer dies and swells rise
The sun goes down in my eyes
See this rolling wave
Darkly coming to take me
Home
And I've never been so alone
And I've never been so alive

i mean don't get me wrong, i know they sort of had a cock rock sound to them. but yet, i can't help but feel like there is some real talent and passion in there, and even if it's not completely balanced out - it's still much better than you'd expect it to be

one of my favs off that record, and legit a great song i wish i would have written to this very day

Everything is quiet since you're not around
And I live in the numbness now
In the background
I do the things we did before
I walk Haight Street to the store
And they say where's that crazy girl
You don't get drunk on red wine and fight no more
I don't see you anymore since the hospital
The plans I make still have you in them
Cause you come swimming into view
And I'm hanging on your words
Like I always used to do
The words they use so lightly
I only feel for you
I only know because I carry you around
In the background
I'm in the background
Words they come and memories all repeat
I lift your head while they change the hospital sheets
And I would never lie to you no
I would never lie to you no
I felt you long after we were through, we were through
The plans I make still have you in them
Cause you come swimming into view
And I'm hanging on your words
Like I always used to do
The words they use so lightly
I only feel for you
I only know because I carry you around
In the background
Cause I felt you long after we were through
Well you come swimming into view
And I'm hanging on your words
Like I always used to do
The words they use so lightly
I only feel to you
I only know because
I'm way I'm way in the background
I'm in the background

Their self-titled album really does hold up. Nothing to be ashamed of there. I would also vouch for Blue as well (it's their more "mature" offering).

I dug Dopamine (their newest) a lot, but that may be because I was going through heavy changes the summer it came out and many of the lyrics/themes seemed to align with what I was going through on some level. I still think it's a pretty sound offering from a band well past their prime and without half of the crew that made the original music so good.

But srsly guyz, we should only be discussing music that skews to one person's particular taste. Nobody express opinions that may in fact be unique to themselves, pls.

i remember trying blue one or two times when i was a kid, and wished to follow up on my love for the first record, but hating it. i don't really see myself actually getting deep into TEB now, but yeah. either way i have a hard time it'll match up to their first effort.

Yeah, I get that. Some things like these, if you didn't get into it at the right time, it's never going to click. I'm sure there's a lot of nostalgia at play with my love for this band.

i've always liked their 2 or 3 big singles, i think i'd maybe considered getting that album once? song you posted was pretty good, definitely a time capsule for late 90s pop rock but not in a bad way

OH you gotta love it

Motorcycle and Narcolepsy have already been mentioned and those are my faves. This band had some killer hooks. Gotta respect them as a talented pop group/whatever pejorative you want to call them to temper your appreciation against their lack of coolness or indie cred.

When my first girlfriend dumped me when I was 15 I listened to Motorcycle Drive By all day every day for awhile

and there's a demon in my head who starts to play
a nightmare tape loop of what went wrong yesterday
and I hold my breath 'till it's more than I can take
and I close my eyes and dream that I'm awake

the tastes of this board resemble the "guilty pleasures" thread on the other music forums I post in sometimes

all the posters with pretty great tastes seem to have left and/or been banned

I'd respect it more if it wasn't EVERY thread being some bullshit someone was really into when they were 13

my guess is that in a few more years you will chill out. you seem to have the same thing I used to have where I understood taste is subjective but couldn't not believe my taste was still better or had more artistic integrity somehow, but eventually I realized that's pretty much nonsense.

Listening to too many Billy Corgan interviews and shit as a teen definitely gave me an unhealthy and warped view of how I should be listening to music. It's ok for something to just sound good and appeal at a basic emotional level. That doesn't make something bad. It was incredibly freeing when I finally accepted there is literally nothing shameful but listening to whatever literally sounds good to your ears. And especially after becoming very jaded to and bored with rock and independent music because of personal oversaturation. It's good to open yourself to other values in art other than the relatively limited set of values self-serious guitar music appreciates.

I mean on a day-to-day basis I am still listening to 75% serious high brow type rock and songwriter music, shit that is telling the audience "I have something important to say."

But in terms of sharing that with others and obsessing over it, I feel like I have done that my whole teen/adult life already and it is very refreshing to discuss something different with people. I dunno if others agree, but that might be why we tend to talk about pop music these days. The seriousness and sobriety of a lot of what I used to listen to has become intellectually boring

I also think I have finally been able to admit that writing good pop music is a true skill. The attitude from the "serious" music world is that pop is simple and anyone can do it but that's not true. 3EB for example are all very proficient musicians and putting songs together how they do is a craft that should be taken seriously. Not any random assortment of musicians could do it. Even music I fucking hate like GNR, those guys are still playing at a level that is beyond what most musicians could ever aspire to and I think it's important to respect that even if it doesn't appeal to you. Except Axl who just fucking sucks.

that's not it at all

just baffled when people's tastes haven't evolved past what they liked at 13

there's a lot more exciting stuff out there than the most traditional types of music
