I'm pretty ambivalent about him actually. I think his whole "drake but weird" thing needs actually both a bit more drake and a bit more weird. If the production was more interersting the songwriting could get away with being so flat, or even vice versa, but as it is he's not impressed me yet.

The production is where his strengths lie I think. The songwriting is a little underwhelming at times. His songs often aren't fleshed out enough especially on his self titled EP. His album TWO is amazing to me just from a production standpoint. It doesn't really sound like anything I've heard before.

Only four albums have stood out to me this year. Everything else I've heard I've either hated or it had no effect on me whatsoever.

"To Be Kind" - Swans
"Melana Chasmata" - Triptykon
"Harbinger" - Mutilation Rites
"July" - Marissa Nadler

I tried to listen to some FKA Twigs because everybody keeps talking about them and I must say I actively hated it.

Oh I heard this great song called "British People" by Rubber Molding on Soundcloud

But I can't really find anything about them online.

It's like my favorite song of the year though

I wish I could get into Chelsea Wolfe, I can hear the influence of bands I worship in her music but I just find myself being bored

So 2014 really really paled in comparison to 2013 for me... but I probably listened to these the most this year:

Ty Segall - Manipulator
Spoon - They Want My Soul
Real Estate - Atlas
Bear Hands - Distraction

I also really enjoyed a bunch of songs from these less solid albums...
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation
The Malpractice - Mass
The Black Lips - Underneath The Rainbow
Big Ups - Eighteen Hours of Static

I also really need to give more time to the newest Interpol and Mac Demarco...

It's good if i can find even two records i like in any given year, so far this year i'm really likign Alvvays even if it flies in the face of my canadian bands suck generalization. Even worse, they're from Toronto. I feel dirty.

which is?

I actually kinds find this video annoying in its indie pop tweeness (8mm film, people on swings, and seriously the girl on keyboard looks like every ontarian indie girl iv'e ever known) It is otherwise though probably my favorite song i heard this year. I can't get it out of my head, the vocal melody is just pop perfection. and i'm hot for Molly Rankin's kinda blase voice.

It makes sense because half the band is actually from there. Molly Rankin is from the Rankin Family (the celtic folk band, her dad was one of them).

edit: actually, correction, i guess the rankin family is from Nova Scotia, not New Brunswick, BUT WHO CAN TELL THOSE TWO GODDAMN PROVINCES APART? I've never been to the maritimes actually. Someday. Sappyfest is a good name for a festival.

New album isn't doing it for me, Thundercat has made him lazy. Listen to YD and then go listen to Los Angeles. So much more sonic detail. So much groove.
