damn that looks cool but too expensive. I was also hoping there would be a whole second disc to this album like IR.

Axl just does bad Aerosmith Covers

okay, finally listened to the album again the whole way through, lyric reading and everything.

it's definitely a big curveball for me. i find it interesting that the entire album feels like it hits a maximum of 30-40% velocity at most, the whwole way through. it's all so downbeat and tame. there are some moments that still made me feel like it's not their most inspired record (namely Daydreaming).

but it's extremely vulnerable and exposed. it conveys that feeling to me of being absolutely crushed about a breakup, so much so that you can't even bring yourself to talk, or play music, or do anything. lots of lyrics repeat again and again, like a song sketch, except it has that radiohead magic and johnny's (excellent) arrangements over it. it's definitely thom's breakup record after his divorce. trigger warning.

oh and true love waits definitely now takes the cake as radiohead's darkest album finisher ever.

I like Daydreaming by itself but it's kind of a slog to get through and really slows the tempo of the album so I skip it if I'm listening to the full album

The Numbers sounds the most like OK Computer to me and it's a song about climate change and the oncoming apocalypse or something

upon listening to the lyrics more closely, they have definitely taken a big turn from the last few radiohead records. it's funny at almost 50 to hear Thom Yorke dismiss a lot of the more intellectual tendencies of his songwriting and look back to his earlier "omg it hurts so bad" style of writing. definitely a break up album, but not angry at all. the mood is more of a numb acceptance with all this turmoil swirling below the surface

Daydreaming is probably my least favorite on the album. It's just kind of simple to me, but it is still an interesting song. The reversed vocal near the end is apparently saying, "Half of my life," which is of course the length of his relationship with his ex

This album seems to reference past Radiohead more than any other. The riff in The Numbers sounds a lot like Optimistic to me (also Neil Young, does anyone else hear that?). Decks Dark sounds like OKC, and the imagery parallels Subterranean Homesick Alien (except the escapist dream has become horribly real). Ful Stop and Present Tense are shades of IR.

Is it common that they do?

I recently saw some trashy British dating show that had a friend of the bachelor in question describing her confusion at his lack of a romantic life, pointing out how he "wears nice clothes, goes to the gym, has good hair, shaves his legs," and missed the rest of his qualities list out of finding the legs thing too fucked to maintain focus.

listened to the record a few more times.

i honestly really didn't see this coming, but i'm really digging most of it now.

this is definitely a big step sideways for radiohead. not in the negative sense at all, though. it's just, it hits me so differently - they've never made music this way before. it's very different to the rest of their catalogue - probably because of yorke's (very personal) lyrics, and subdued delivery. it's funny, everybody thinks of radiohead as a "depression band", and in some ways that's true, but their records were always about collective experiences - large scale alienation, general heartbreak, dissociation. it almost never got too personal.

on this record, though, i really feel like for the first time, it cuts truly deep, and exposes the heart and soul of thom and what he went through with his breakup from who was his partner for 25 years. it takes more guts to put yourself out there like this, and they went for it. it sounds tired, unmotivated, lethargic. that's part of what made me think it was uninspired - coupled with the fact that they suddenly busted out some songs from years and years ago and put them on this record.

but i 'get it' now - they put them into the right context so brilliantly. it has total merit to be there - it's not facetious. burn the witch makes a great statement starting off the record in a very different style to most of what's to follow, and true love waits closes the album so perfectly.

i think this record showcases johnny greenwood at his absolute prime. the beautifully creative guitar work (ful stop, decks dark, that gorgeous fucking delayed harpstrum on identikit), the brilliant orchestrations, the choral arrangements - this just really goes to show how musically flawless this guy is. his presence alone is a huge part of what makes this record so enchanting to me.

the second half (identikit-the numbers-present tense-tinker soldier... - true love waits sequence) is up there among the band's finest.

this post kept springing to my mind while listening:

i can't think of a record that spoke so quietly for me the first time around, but with each successive listen, started to reveal itself more and more with its many, many nuances and soft touches. it really is beautifully crafted for the most part.

my favs at the moment:

Desert Island Disk, Identikit, The Numbers, Tinker Tailor ... , True Love Waits, Burn The Witch

track by track coming up soon
