Lightbulb the music inquiry and recommendation thread

i have never been a huge david bowie fan, never got around to giving him a proper chance i guess. but when he died i randomly clicked a Black Star embed and to quote a certain Mr. Roes, first name Fuzz, it blew my socks off.

where do i start with david bowie? sarah i'm looking at you.

also feel free to drop recommendations about music you're digging atm.

you could start with this handful of albums: the man who sold the world, hunky dory, ziggy stardust, aladdin sane, diamond dogs, young americans, station to station, low, "heroes", lodger, scary monsters, let's dance, outside, earthling, heathen.

and then all the rest.

attempt to make the list shorter; albums i like the most: the man who sold the world, ziggy stardust, aladdin sane, diamond dogs, station to station, low, scary monsters, outside.

he's got some nice live albums too.

Am I supposed to recommend stuff you might like, or stuff I like that I think other people should try out

Or did you really just want to ask about Bowie

i guess i'll start with the man who sold the world? i dunno.
i know all those names, they're all classics. can you guys narrow it down? what's this guy's Siamese Dream?

btw elph doesn't have to be about me, i guess this thread is for everybody. but don't say daniel johnson

Liking Bowie just won't happen unless you start with the exact right album and listen to the rest in a precise order, with appropriate intervals of time between them. If a single song is out of order in your discovery of his output, it will result in you hating Bowie as an artist for the rest of your life.

I really like The Man Who Sold the World any of the other guys' lists are fine places to start, too.

Ziggy Stardust is probably his most iconic, and it's very "classic rock" and easy to digest. Lady Stardust gives me mad chills every time I listen to it. So epic.

femme fatales emerged to watch this creature fair
boys stood upon the chairs to make their point of view
I smiled sadly for a love I could not obey
Lady Stardust sang his songs of darkness and dismay

Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs, Low, and Heroes are my personal favourites.

Listening to one era of Bowie won't particularly inform a person of the other eras, as they're so transformative and evolving. IMO, even one album can be amazing, and the next very unappealing.

The 4 albums I mentioned are probably the ones I experience as being the most melody-rich.

Depends on what you liked

I can't imagine anyone not liking at least some Fall (Assuming they like Rock)

And also can't imagine anyone liking all of The Fall

Heroes was also released the same year as Low and just as good, maybe even better but i'm a little biased, despite the title song being the best ever.

he made these albums with Eno and some synthesizers that they acquired to play with, probably brand new at the time

i remember it being some obnoxiously loud live show and it was very repetitive

I'm thinking maybe Perverted by Language might be your speed

More atmospheric and introspective rather than noisy and minimalist

Marky feeling trapped, his suburban life with Brix not what he hoped for
