We have a tendency in America to underfund social programs and then declare "see, the public sector is fundamentally flawed, deregulate and privatize everything!".
Education and health care are not "freebies", "handouts", or "entitlement programs". God forbid we take care of our own people. And furthermore it's an investment in society. But let's keep everyone unskilled and unhealthy so they have no choice but to work minimum wage jobs for assholes like Papa John. He didn't amass his fortune in a vacuum. The intensity of work and number of hours spent working are not the only variables contributing to economic success; most of them are beyond any individual's control. To pretend otherwise is disingenuous at best. But fuck them, they're just looking for freebies and handouts from entitlement programs when they should be thanking the almighty job creator for providing a shitty standard of living. Remember the single-payer option which was absolutely slaughtered on the altar of freedom? Yeah, taxes are evil, just ask every country that's truly more egalitarian than we are, or look at social security, the most unanimously popular social program this country has ever seen. Yes, we all pay a portion of our taxes to support it, but as a result we don't see seniors starving and freezing to death on park benches. But fuck them, they should have worked harder for some minimum wage providing asshole for the first 60 years of their lives, they're just parasites taking away from my dream of owning a golf course and a fleet of hummers. And recall that the most productive years this country has ever seen grew out of social programs funded by a 70% tax rate |

Capitalism doesn't always have the answers, folks, that's why Barnes and Noble throws books they can't sell in the garbage and why their cafe throws "expired" food in the garbage. Profit does not always equal the most efficient use of resources.
Nor does it always equate to the highest quality products, hence, the dishwasher you just bought 3 years ago decided to stop working right after your warranty ran out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence We have the ability to makes dishwashers that last for 50 years, but then Sears would lose a customer for 50 years. |

I remember watching A Muppet Christmas Carol and thinking "Man I sure hope tiny Tim dies. That'd be a good lesson about rugged individualism."
But then I realized Scrooge is probs a Jew. |

It's called not killing your goose that lays golden eggs. Anyone whose ever taken a management class knows about treating your employees well to get the best returns from them. Chances are though most businessmen don't know how to manage staff, and just sell cheap pizzas well.
