Interestingly in medieval times, the chivalric code did not set guidelines for male/female interactions specifically but in fact was a system of values for how the strong should treat the weak. It is often confused with the code of courtly love, which is a moral system which speaks on romantic relationships (and also is quite foreign to our modern socially accepted views of sex and romance).

Applying the values of chivalry to how men should treat women is, quite literally, saying that females are weak and need to be protected by their stronger, smarter male counterparts.
