i wish people would actually make more of an effort to be their own person. that's a more general criticism

do you not agree that it's boring when everyone has the same opinion? that was all i was saying. it had nothing to do with 'i'm so much better than you'. it's true that it's boring when everyone puts siamese dream at the top of their list and the rest of it is filled with the rest of the pumpkins catalogue and then the usual crap like jeff buckley and the cure and whatever

my list was nothing radical, but at least i've made an effort to go beyond 90s 'alternative rock' or whatever you call iut

Oh shut the fuck up celluloid love. You're eccentric, other people aren't, we get it. Doesn't mean your musical tastes are better than others. It also doesn't mean that other people haven't "made an effort to go beyond 90's alternative rock"...that's your own ignorant assumption. I've listened to Lightning Bolt and I think it's fucking shit.

Okay, so at least you admit you were trolling. Carry on.

So, you troll, and then ask "why do people get worked up over this shit?". I would think that your trolling this thread would mean that you understood that people don't like their tastes and opinions being assailed. Fucking idiot!

i'm not really getting worked up, i'm just trying to have some sort of discussion about it; music is pretty much my favorite subject, and i enjoy a good debate.
speaking for myself, i put sd at the top of the list because it honestly is my favorite album of all time. And a lot of 90's music had a big effect on me, such as vs., ritual, ok computer and others, they stand the test of time. funny enough, when the 90's were actually going on, i never would have admitted to liking oasis, lol. Now, i don't reallly care, i like it and that's that.

i do agree that it would be boring if everyone had the same opinion; but i don't seek out music so that i can escape listening to what other people listen to. that seems just as lame as listening to what everyone else likes because it's easy to do. I decided a long time ago that i'm alot happier just being honest with myself about what i like rather than trying to listen to stuff i really don't like just so i can be different.

I do like checking out mp3 blogs to find new bands though; gorilla vs bear being one of my favorites. There are so many small bands that no one would have heard of otherwise, who are becoming much easier to find thanks to mp3 blogs. some of my favorite finds have been tapes n tapes, sparrowhouse, birdmonster, the mugs, and most recently luke de spa's band sleepy demons. another cool thing to do if you want to find new stuff is to write an mp3 blog. I get tons of free cds from bands and artist reps thanks to my mp3 blog.

by the way, i forgot to put tapes n tapes 'the loon' on my list. that's 51.

i mean it's like when you have a thread and someone says recommend me a movie

and everyone says the exact same movie. what's the point? you're just repeating what's already been said here. that is what this thread is like. everyone repeating themselves

lol, whatever
boring, taste, it's all subjective. I'm certainly not going to listen to lightening bolt so that you can find me more interesting (though they do put on a fun live show). I don't really find your list any more interesting and exciting than anyone else's. i guess you're more interested in trolling than having any real conversation anyway, so whatever.

on another note, i love EVERYTHING on pale blue eyes' list.

i just replied to that soundtrack thread, and made a point not to list anything i'd seen already, so i get your point. But this is supposed to be a list of your favorite albums, right? i'm not going to make up some favorites so that i can impress people with my knowledge of underground music; i'm just listing the ones i most like to listen to.

oh sure, play that card

i feel like people who listen to the same stuff forever haven't really submitted themselves to everything else and haven't drowned in it

look at everyone's reaction to lightning bolt in this thread, including your own. it's like repulsion. that would make me think hey maybe there's something to this band...

and you actually give it a chance, and maybe you'll figure out what they're really getting at, and then it makes sense, and you just go from there. i don't feel like people are doing this enough...like actively engaging in what they're listening to..

you're way off base, at least where i'm concerned. I'm a big fan of the visual artists that lightning bolt are aquainted with such as brian ralph and all of the fort thunder stuff, which is how i first heard of them. They're friends with my friend chris, who's invited them to play here and stay at his house several times, and i've spent time watching and hanging out with them. I enjoy them in a live setting, but it's just not what i care to listen to when i'm driving in my car or listening to the ipod at work. It's much more a visceral thing with them, and for ME it doesn't care over to recorded work. The difference between you and i is that i can respect the fact that you like them, but you can't respect the fact that other people like things that you don't like. My not liking LB is not a case of me not trying to get what they're doing, because i have done that.

and i just got finished talking about how much i love to find new bands via mp3 blogs and suggestions from people who've heard stuff i haven't heard, so it makes no sense for you to say that i haven't 'submitted myself to everything else'. I'm on a neverending quest for music i haven't heard. I'm always eager to find something new, and I'm always very open minded about it.

I have to admit that I don't have the broadest knowledge of artists, though that doesn't really make an opinion any less meaningful. But then many people think knowledge means more than reasoning anyway so for them I can only offer sympathy. There is also of course the notion of relation to music/artists that I will say in my case can supersede their artistic merit as viewed from a so called "informed source". Yet again, I can only offer my sympathy on their delusions of grandeur when the subject is completely, and utterly, subjective.

Also, none of you have Killing Joke on your lists so they all suck.

then everyone would listen to lightning bolt and then they'd come in enough lists that you'd complain about them being too generic eventually. its like a vicious circle, there's no point in caring.

netphoria has actually opened me to a few bands and i like that, but i still have quite a few albums that would be in my top 50 that would be in everyone else's top 50. but i dont see how that matters. just because everyone likes an album like kid a doesnt mean id like it any less, and there's no way albums like that wouldnt be in my top albums.

some albums are so good that everyone likes them, its really no big deal. i like to listen to a lot of music but every new thing i listen to wont be better than what ive listened to before. thinking, "no one's mentioned this album i should mention it in my top 50" makes you just as much of a tool as someone that thinks "oh shit everyone's mentioned this album i should mention it too." you just shouldnt think about those things when composing personal lists, its very subjective.

I had plenty of albums like that in my list but people can only pick out stuff like Linkin Park and Blink 182 to talk about.

Like, those 2 albums were amazing to me when I was 13 and even though I really wouldn't listen to them now, I'm not going to completely banish them from my memory.
