Default Jeff Schroeder appreciation thread

I admit, in the beginning watching Jeff Schroeder step into the great James Iha's shoes was a bitter pill, but over the years my reaction to him has softened.
He really has proven himself to have amazing guitar chops and I think he's earned his Pumpkin status.

I know there are many fine examples, but here are a couple that caught my ear:

--- Did Jeff come up with the electric guitar melody for Lonely is the Name on his own? If so, major kudos to Jeff. I love this song.

I cannot stop plugging this song (Lonely is the Name):

"I Play Yamaha"
Jeff Schroeder

Since 2007, Jeff Schroeder has been both a touring and recording member of the critically acclaimed band, the Smashing Pumpkins. Growing up in Los Angeles, Jeff played in numerous bands, most notably, the Lassie Foundation. Between 1998 and 2004, Jeff recorded three albums and two EPs with the band. The sound of the Lassie Foundation can best be described as a melange of the British shoegaze movement with the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys. From 2001 to 2007, he left the music industry to pursue a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Los Angeles. In the fall of 2006, Jeff was introduced to Billy Corgan, who was in Los Angeles making the Smashing Pumpkin's album "Zeitgeist" (2007). By the spring of 2007, he was officially on board as a member of the newly reformed band and toured the world in support of Zeitgeist. In the summer of 2007, the band played a series of historic concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, California. These shows were captured on the concert DVD, "If All Goes Wrong" (2008). Beginning with the last two tracks recorded for the " Teargarden by Kaleidyscope" project and continuing with "Oceania" (2012) and "Monuments for an Elegy" (2014), Jeff has become a staple member of the recording team.
In addition to his recent work with the Pumpkins, Jeff also produced an EP and a full-length album for the South Korean alternative band, "Asian Chairshot". Jeff currently lives in Chicago and is studying jazz guitar with Scott Hesse. He is working on two musical projects: a soundtrack for a music documentary on the Champaign-Urbana, IL indie music scene and an EP of instrumental guitar music.

i wonder if "being hated on for the sole reason that you are not James Iha" was factored into Jeff's payment plan when he joined The Smashing Pumpkins

it's easy to joke about Jeff but in all honesty, i really respect the kind of loyalty he's shown towards Billy over the years

I mean, I understand that but why? Well, I guess I could respect him for roughing it through the worst songwriting period of BC's career for whatever monetary gain, but what does he really owe the guy? I definitely don't respect it from an artistic standpoint.

that's true. imagine it was rough joining the band, working hard learning the catalog, touring, while bill makes shit decisions and puts out bad records

I actually felt that, around the 20th Anniversary Shows, his playing really showed potential and he seemed to be developing his own style. Unfortunately, when he came back in 2010 his playing lost all personality and he was back to noodling and meandering. I have no doubt he's a cool guy, and a talented guitarist in his own right, but like Mike Byrne,I have no doubt Billy forced him to play a certain style which was bland and devoid of any personality.

Also, I do not know if I can ever forgive him for that horrible ebow he added to "Tonight, Tonight" in 2012/2013.

It would be worth hearing what he did to stay in Billy's good graces for more than 10 years.

I know this is a joke thread but holy Christ those videos are terrible. Why bring out Iha on an acoustic turned all the way down and have Shroader noodle over top of him with some random pentatonic bullshit with his volume on 11?

I love Jeff, he's an amazing guitar player, very versatile and he stayed with Billy in a very unstable time of his life. It's a pity he had to help Billy with whatever he decided, I wish he had the same freedom to take decision on behalf of the band like the original members had.

I like Jeff a lot. He's a great player and a nice guy in person (based on the time I met him at a record signing). Different vibe than James a welcome change.

I appreciate jaff for being spineless and for enabling billy to make shitty music.
Without jeff, billy would never have sunk so low and billy would never have the potential to make a full comeback.

thanks jeff.
thanks for nothing.

Thanks jeff for being in the band with mike barns. you definitely didn't make mike look like the biggest loser in the band.

we hate you jeff.
