Much better than say, "Blank page is all the rage" or "Your love is strange".
Do you really think D+F lyrics are better than Blank Page lyrics?

Thanks!

But can you explain, in detail, line by line, the lyrical meaning of either of those songs?

That was the challenge you put forth to those who are fond of most of BC's lyrics, and I was just wondering if you would take up your own challenge on one of the two songs you deem lyrically 'good'.

Sure thing, but I'll need a little time. I'm at work and won't be able to write a thorough run down until later this evening.

No problem, I'll give as good of a breakdown as possible given the source material with which I have to work with. I think it'll be both fun and educational for everyone.

And perfect imagery to start the song:
Quote:
With the sugar sickness
You spy the kidnap kid
Who kids you to oblivion
It's the perfect hassle
For the perfumed kiss
He makes you miss him more than home

rhinoceros is about she noes she noes

hummer is "a song about my life" according to Billy Corgan when defending the content from some critic

doomsday clock is about chicken in my heart

I honestly can't remember which one tiberius is that album was too bad to listen to more than once.

"blank page was all the rage" always has meant to me that the narrator is trying to be a blank page (aka not having feelings or thoughts) because of how much pain he feels from the things he describes in the song like knowing she's with someone else etc

jelly blossom, i have no problem with your opinion that abstract lyrics suck and that corgan's abstract lyrics in particular are bad, but he definitely has written some great songs with great lyrics. i have to wonder how one becomes a fan posting on a message board if they dont take anything from the lyrics.

and just to make a point...

The useless drag of another day
The endless drags of a death rock boy
Mascara sure and lipstick lost
Glitter burned by restless thoughts of being forgotten
presumably talking about himself, he is talking about being stuck in the image of a 'death rock boy', that his identity is that but he is getting burned out by it. but he still does it because he wants to stay in the spotlight and not be forgotten

Quote:
And in your sad machines
You'll forever stay
Desperate and displeased-with whoever you are
And you're a star
sad machines = his fans, teenagers mostly at the time

he'll forever stay as their death rock boy leader, desperately clinging to it to stay a rock star, though he's displeased with it and outgrown it

Quote:
Somwhere-he pulls his hair down-over a frowning smile
A hidden diamond you cannot find
A secret star that cannot shine over to you
May the king of gloom, be forever doomed
somewhere, a different version of himself exists, one where he is able to at least partially be happier (frowning smile), but it's hidden and secret, he doesnt know how to get to be that person exactly, but when he does he can declare that his old persona, now referred to as 'the king of gloom', was/is doomed, AKA doomed to stay unhappy if he continued to be the death rock boy.

Quote:
And in your sad machines
You'll forever stay
Burning up in speed
Lost inside the dreams, of teen machines
same as before, he's still famous in the hearts of teenager fans, deep in their consciousness

Quote:
The useless drags, the empty days
The lonely towers of long mistakes
To forgotten faces and faded loves
Sitting still was never enough
the empty days of living as this death rock boy, alone and lonely in his persona, now thought of as perhaps a mistake, he admits that he must act and not sit still, as that will not change anything

the lonely towers of long mistakes creates interesting imagery in my mind of a very high tower alone in an abandoned place, perhaps a parking lot or forest, a tower where all of his old friends and lovers and memories are

Quote:
And if you're giving in, then you're giving up
Cause in your sad machines
You'll forever stay
Burning up in speed
Lost inside the dreams, of teen machines
if he decides to live as the death rock boy, give in to the persona completely, he's giving up living a happier life. he will forever just be the death rock boy in his teenage fan's eyes and memories, never growing up or evolving. stuck inside the perceptions of teenagers, or of being an idol to teenagers, of trying to be edgy to teenagers

My interpretation is similar. Billy described Blank Page as the first way he directly addressed his divorce, which until that time he had just sort of bottled up and not let himself think about or grieve over because of all the stuff going on in his life... his mom dying, MCIS release and the global tours that followed, Jimmy getting the boot, being the biggest rock act in the world (for a brief moment anyway).

"Blank page was all the rage, never meant to say anything," is a comment on how he internalized his feelings about his ex-wife and pushed forward, only showing the public his game face. It just seemed like the thing to do, it was "all the rage" and it allowed him to keep shoveling coal into the SP popularity engine. All the rage is of course a phrase referring to something wildly popular, so it fits in that way as well. The way he faced these demons by just blindly pushing through them, he "never meant to say anything" on the subject at all, just completely bury and swallow it down.

Blank page could also refer directly to the phenomenon of sitting down to write something (perhaps a letter to his ex, perhaps this song in which he deals with his feelings?) but comes up with nothing for a long time (it was all the rage), and he keeps telling himself he isn't writing this mystery text (metaphor for not running and staring down the beast) because he has no intention of doing so instead of it being something he is unable to do.

good interpretation.

i mean if we want incomprehensible songs really a great example is Geek USA, and it's a song that is very well regarded anyway. weird pseudo-cliches (kiss kiss all of this, the hiss that we had missed), "shot full of diamonds" - ???

but then the climax of the lyrics is comprehensible and can be seen as explaining the nonsense of he other lyrics, although im sure this wasnt intended and it just worked out that way, and they stand out as awesome on their own - "words cant define what i feel inside/who needs them?/caught with this virus for my mind/I give in to my disease of my needs"

Blank Page was about his ex wife. Billy's girlfriend didn't allow him to talk about anything related to how his marriage fell apart.

Blank Page is a song about not being allowed to write a song about that all.

I'd never considered that before. However, the booklet also includes no punctuation whatsoever in the lyrics, the title seems to run into the rest of the lyrics which run into each other. Could also be that the idea of the "blank page" is so central to this song that the title itself becomes part of the lyrics, which is the opposite of Billy's usual habit of sticking an arbitrarily associated word or phrase on a song as its title.
