I don't even believe you play guitar if you actually think that

When's the last time Corgan's even done anything impressive with the guitar? Even their big guitar album Zeitgeist lacks anything all that difficult to play.

I'll have you a shredding contest... Just a 90 second clip, you can record a rhythm part to solo over, must be an original composition. Deadline will be 2 weeks from now. You down?

or you could just not make dumb comments like "Cuomo >>> Corgan on guitar"

c'mon, even this rowdy bunch of BC detractors aren't gonna side with that half-cocked assessment! might as well say Iha could "out-shred" him while you're at it!

I honestly think that Corgan's guitar prowess is overrated around these parts.

When's the last time he's released a piece of music that featured anything impressive guitar wise? 1993?

And they're going on tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy next year! Holy shit!

Siva breakdown solos from the past year or two have been pretty monumental

Well, the new album is literally called "Van Weezer" so I think the homage is a clear one

I think they fucking crushed it though and I'm stoked for the rest of the album. I don't think we're gonna hear any of the modern sounding stuff that dominated the past 2 albums. Weezer letting loose and rocking is always the best Weezer

Yeah, he can still rip the old shit live, but he hasn't shown the ability to compose much (if any) impressive guitar work in the last 25 years. I don't know if he's just lost the passion or the ability to subconsciously connect with his guitar or what the deal is. But the proof is in the pudding as they say and Cuomo has definitely recorded a lot more cool guitar work since 93 than Corgan has.

Ha! It always amuses me how the Corgan fans always grip onto Song For A Son as some sorta proof that Corgan can still write great guitar work. It's for the most part a pretty rudimentary solo, but then near the end he sorta shows a glimpse of some of the signature Gish-SD style and it's pretty cool, but we're pointing to crumbs here.

Zeitgeist has some cool flourishes here and there, a few parts on Tarantula come to mind, but the good guitar work over the last 25 years is few and far between. The fact that a solo on some crappy Teargarden song and a few moments on Zeitgeist are the best that fans can point to to prove that Corgan can still compose great guitar work is pretty amusing to me, but it's also quite sad if one was to really contemplate it... Especially considering how Corgan was once thought of as one of the real up and coming guitar talents from 91-93.

I mean, Cuomo follows the same mindset as Corgan. They're guys who play with a lot of restraint. I think if you saw each of these guys trying to do their best shredding that they'd probably surprise a lot of people.

But take a solo like this (I cued it up), not saying it's amazing or anything, but it's interesting guitar prowess nonetheless, shit like this is littered throughout Weezers catalogue, and you just rarely hear chops like that from anything by Corgan in the last 25 years

lol alright, you're on. My amp literally exploded (sparked and smoked and shit) so I was playing strictly acoustic, but I bought a serviceable enough little practice amp at a garage sale that has a distortion settting.

We'll have to judge the content based on originality and proficiency and not sonic quality though. I'm probably just gonna record with a little radio-shack mic

But we're acting on good faith here, I don't want you to get one of your hipster buddies to lay down some wicked shit in an attempt to belittle me

Well shit man, if you put a gun to my head and asked who I honestly believed wrote better music from 1997-2019, I'd have to say Dave Grohl.

The artistic collapse of Billy Corgan has been a weird one and you'd think with all his resources to the best producers in the business that it wouldn't be hard to put out some great work, but it's like god stripped him of his soul or something. That spiritual energy that just grips ones emotion hasn't been in there in a long, long time

It really does. Lord knows Weezer puts out some crap, but they come out with so much content that there's always enough meat on the bone for a fan to stay interested... Compare that to Corgan where every lackluster release takes an eternity and there's no surprise why The Pumpkins are relegated to oldies status while Weezer always maintains an air of relevancy. Say what one will about Rivers, but he genuinely still seems artistically curious whereas it feels like Corgan is begrudgingly making content in order to pay the bills.
