Default Why are they arranging Hummer like this live?

sorry i'm obsessed with guitar shit lately

so i'm watching 2018 live vids and it seems like all three guitars are just playing the octave pattern during the final hit: [cued]

why. it sounds super nasally, doesn't it? in the old days iha would do the octave thing and corgan would play the rhythm [DED/DEG (?)] and it sounds more full and orchestral: [cued]

anyone can play guitar. anyone can fall in love

i get exactly what you mean, but that ending of hummer in '93 has billy's guitar so soft in the mix by that bit until the end of the song that you can't really tell anyway.

this is probably a better example where you can actually hear it properly:

(cued to the pinnacle)

but yeah i completely agree with you. i also think's it's lazy and tacky when you have 2 guitars playing the same thing too much, let alone 3 guitars.

They don't use real amps anymore. Just modeling effects fed into monitors.

Solid thread, Ram. I'm sure there are a ton of other decisions they made that are as asinine as this for that tour. The fuck is happening.

Only thing i can imagine is that it’s easier/less taxing to old ass arthritic fingers to play the octave (pumpkin) chord

Ram the less time you spend fetishizing an era you weren't alive to see the better you'll feel

It's never gonna be 1993 again, not in terms of music, performance, vocals, nothing

Find something good that's out there today

Knowing is half the battle

not true. i don't know about aha but organ is using that massive rack of amp mods going into an iso cab off stage.

i dunno maybe they felt the riff needed to stand out more/have more power? ask billy in his next instagram questions. report back here with your findings.

Nah, obsessing is fine. Like why are we here other than to obsess over the good old stuff and gape at the bad new stuff.

Only if it’s interfering with your pursuits of your happinesses, Ram, would i suggest u stop making threads like this

There's appreciation and then there's outright wishing you lived in that world, and you'll never get anything out of that kind of mindset but crushing disappointment every time you look around you.

I stand by my statement because Ram's mentioned wanting to buy 96 tour shirts and that to me is a real indication of wishing you were there. Maybe a bit much. I dunno.

And yeah no. I'm not here to do any of that because the narrative of "all the old stuff is good and all the new stuff is bad" is fucking idiotic. The band long since peaked and a lot of new stuff ain't up to par, but it just ain't that simple.

lol. well you all know i'm fucked up

uhm, with regards to this at least, i think it's positive for me -- being this deeply analytical about the old stuff increases my appreciation of it and my general happiness. and the shitty new stuff does the same; the contrast makes the climax of 94 hummer even sweeter. the more pleasure we can eek from the dregs of the old days, the better, right?

i'm happy if i'm obsessing over hummer guitar parts and not, uhm, women

~~

i love nothing; i'll check out cloakroom

I just worry man and I don't want you to wish you were in another time

I feel like the healthy way to look at SP in 2020 is to just try and get what enjoyment you can out of what you can

I never, ever got the chance to see SP during their original run but at the very least getting to see them do Aeroplane last year was everything I needed it to be, that and the Shiny tour were sure as shit better than the 2012 and 2015 shows I attended

Played the first video, yawned and cringed to Billy's lazy vocals.
Played the second video, instant goosebumps.

Says enough to me. I'll just keep listening to old shows thank you very much.
