Dubbed or Subbed?
Dubbed or Subtitled? How do you prefer to watch content (movies and TV) that is in a language you do not speak?

most animation: dubbed (provided they didn't totally fuck it up)
live action: subbed so for the purposes of this thread & its respectable pole: spa ced |

Depends on how tired I am or how far away the screen is

I think dubbing has gotten much better in recent years. If i was going to watch a Fellini movie I'd never watch a dubbed version. But if I were going to watch a mediocre Netflix series I'd rather watch it dubbed.

I forgot about Ghibli which I nearly always prefer dubbed
But everything else I like subbed. I might prefer Ghibli subbed but I’ve never tried it for some reason |

I don't watch anime much and I don't think I have ever watched a dubbed live-action movie. Do they even make those for English audiences anymore? Every foreign film I see is subbed.
Because the internet has ruined my brain, as soon as I start a foreign film, I'm overwhelmed by the fact that I will actually need to look at the screen to tell what's going on and can't just "watch" the movie while scrolling through my phone. Maybe 15 minutes into it is when my brain adapts and realizes that this isn't too hard. Maybe radio plays are going to make a comeback with zoomers because they are the form of narrative media most compatible with simultaneous scrolling. |

Why haven't I ever noticed that
I associated dubbed live-action with, like, '70s martial arts films |

a lot of the Netflix content I watch has fairly good English dubbing.

I have no need of subs nor dubs. I simply understand the foreign-language film by paying close attention. By the time the credits roll, I have already become fluent.

I'm not a purist, dubbed is just more distracting. I get real neurotic about their mouths not matching the sound
