Finally watched Avatar

Damn if Cameron doesn't know how to craft a bitchin flick: the plot beats were perfectly paced, the cgi was amazing, the climax was delicious, etc

But also, damn if this isn't one of the most racist "white savior" narratives I've ever seen. Not sure I can get past that to even grant any score out of 10....

This is a revenge movie, with the object of revenge being pornographers who make those van porn films where they pick up girls on the street, trick them into sex on camera, then humiliate them. Great set-up. Who doesn't want to see pornographers murdered. But it doesn't really deliver. Obvious low budget production valuie not really being the issue here. Plot is thin and plot 'twist' at the end is weak.

However, if you feel like wasting 1:19 watching a woman torture and kill a couple of scumbags, this is an easy choice.

This is both a love story and an "on the run" caper film about a 20 something lesbian in Australia who makes off with a bag full of cash that belongs to gangters. Also, she's a DJ with middle Eastern ancestry. Why she decides to run with the money isn't quite clear. And her effeminate gay male side kick is a blanant stereotype and not terribly effective as a comic foil. But some of the story involving her female love interest, including a well shot sex scene kind of rescue this one despite some very big plot holes.

Summertime (original title: La Belle Saison)

B+

This French/Belgian film is set in the early 70s and is a love story involving two women. One a farm girl from the North. The other a Parisian feminist. Very well acted with some good cinematography and fairly good attention to period detail (clothing, sets, etc). The film also turns some storytelling conventions around. It would have been easy to tell such a story by depicting the older feminist Parisian character as some kind of a faminist predator, but it's actually the farm girl who is the protagonist and the one who instigates a relationship with an otherwise "straight" woman. This is fairly good love story, with "hard R" graphic sex scenes and what can be described as a typical French ending.
