Well, I mean they've only released one album since The Suburbs so I don't think they're quite a lot cause.

Reflektor was a clunker and this sounds like the better side of it. I'm cautiously optimistic they can still turn around.

And even if they don't, they have three unimpeachable classics (from my viewpoint). That's the most I can ask of any band, really.

Like, name three bands that have recorded more than three true, blue classics? You probably can't.

It was insane they hardly fit on the tiny ass stage, ther performance was like an old Pentecost gospel snake handling sort of lunacy, and at the end they all filed offstage and out the back door of the club humming, softly/eerily, the outro to headlights look like diamonds

It's why I will buy any album they ever put out and go see every tour, they won me over for life with that single astonishing gig

Saw them at the 400 Bar in November 2004. One of the first shows I ever taped and one of the best shows I've ever seen. Spring 2005 they came back and played First Avenue which is waaaaay bigger. Haven't seen them since and haven't heard much after Neon Bible to be honest.

I get the "listening to nothing" feel from their early albums but it's better than offensively bad music

Id go see them live

like The National the music is atmospheric but every song just drones on way too long and I'm not sure what is supposed to move me

it's like ambient music with guitars

and I'm not someone who wants big chugging riff rock, I'm not coming at it from that angle

then Reflektor does it with a big groovy bassline right in the opening track and I'm like okay now I can get behind this

But do you actually like the whole Reflektor album from front to back? I like Reflektor (the song) and a handful of others, but I find the album as a whole to be quite the slog.

I agree. But then you have like 12 other tracks to get through.

Maybe I look at these things differently, but I judge an album as a whole. If it only has a handful of really great songs then, great as those songs may be, it's not necessarily a great album.

See that's one of the things I like so much about funeral: it's got a trippy, layered sauce of ambient magic poured over scrappy livingroom rock, from the 1st big droning, echoey piano notes (juxtaposed so marvelously against the mischievous/playfully twinkling background figure), I'm in a trance until the strings fade endlessly out on learning to drive

Especially enjoy the amateurish drumming which I think sets them apart from the quantized, cut/paste MacBook Pro, fake/sterile rhythm sections found in the endless indie copycats

Really, it's just too f'ing long of an album though. And a lot of the songs on the middle just kinda blend together.
I listened to it a lot and saw them at the Barclays center and I can't even recall one song

I like it. These two new songs are much more energetic than most of Reflektor. It feels like they're picking up where Afterlife left off, and that's a good direction from my pov.

as a whole Reflektor is not what I would call an amazing album. The first half is pretty boring to me. But the last few songs are so strong, it's hard for me to figure out exactly how I feel about it as a total entity

I also don't think the Suburbs is as amazing as everyone else seems to think. There are a lot of perfect songs but there is substantial bloat as well. If the album were maybe 5 songs shorter, it would be better

Kinda same, I mainlined that album like a goon and went to the show but other than that crazy multi drum intro to Orpheus Eurydice (it's never over) or whatever it's called I can't remember what any of the fuggen of the songs are sound like no mores just a blank in my skull

I am feeling however that perhaps in many years it will grow on me, sometimes shits too ahead of my times to connect to my wiggleworm corpseparty of a heart

so I've heard three tracks now (have more been released?) and honestly I am not very impressed. Kind of feels like they just don't have much to say on this one or something

I'm more excited about the new National, although I don't know if I could like anything more than I loved the last album
