Man this thread is making me wish I was in New Orleans. I got a short list of recommendations from a guy that grew up there and you've mentioned every place he did but one (two if you count the now closed Joe's Cozy Corner). Ever been to Iacovone Kitchen?

Damn, that's quite the list
Tbh, even if you have nothing to go by, if you simply start at Bourbon then just follow whatever sounds are most appealing to you, the place it's coming from will probably let you in for free & you can just take it from there. My friend took me to a place called 30 90 once which was cool if you're looking for a "classy joint" there was a band playing some kinda funk/jazz experimental shit, they were really good but everyone was fixated on that big fight that happened last year |

When I was in New Orleans I couldn’t find any jazz, and I went into a shop to ask. This was in the French quarter, which reeked of horse manure and vomit and was littered with horrible drunk American tourists flashing their breasts at everyone. I said “excuse me, do you know where I could find some jazz being played?” Or something equally nerdy and the shop owner said “what? Uh no. I dunno.”
Hopefully it’s different now. Preservation hall was great but this was 1999 so I don’t know if it’s the same now or not. I loved the city apart from the feckless tourists. |

1999 was pre TripAdvisor. We had no phones. I was 19 and my friend was 22, neither of us had expected to visit New Orleans, but we met a 23 year old Irish guy in a hostel in New York city (it was a condemned brownstone in Harlem, illegally run as a hostel by some Russian woman who employed illegal immigrants from the Czech Republic to do all the maintenance and management, to be precise)
Anyway the Irish guy was like “I’m catching the greyhound to New Orleans, wanna come?” so we just tagged along. PSA the greyhound journey from New York to New Orleans will cause suicidal ideation We arrived knowing nothing and followed the noise to the French quarter before realising it was as you say not New Orleans. We were walking from our hostel into town and this white guy pulled up in his car and said “You shouldn’t be walking around here, it’s not safe.” And like two minutes later a group of black guys walked past us, smoking a joint and offered us a smoke as we crossed paths. I mean how nice is that. Fuck that white guy I miss those pre internet days sometimes. Nobody had a phone so at the condemned brownstone in Harlem backpackers from all over the world took turns playing guitar and singing songs knowing that their music would disappear into the ether and not be recorded by some asshole on the other side of the room They were better days I finally plucked up the courage to take a turn and played Your Ghost by Kristin Hersh because I was all WOE IS ME I AM TOO ART FOR MY OWN GOOD and also because you know, it’s easy to play. |

Never been but thank you. Highly recommend the WWII museum. Last time I visited friends I stopped at Guy's on the way to the airport. I had a po' boy for lunch but got a shrimp (no mayo just hot sauce) to go. When I got back to town I knew which neighborhood spot my friend from Baton Rouge would be hanging out in. I handed the shrimp po' boy to him and he was speechless. He insisted that I have half with him and even though it was probably 5 or 6 hours old at the time it was delicious and no one got sick.
