Right.

I think it's clear the only one here who makes a conscious decision to listen to certain artists so it reflects a certain image on them is you. So nice explanation of yourself there.

I happen to listen to what I like. Music that mostly none of my friends (with the exception of some from college) listen to. So I definitely don't pick the music I listen to to fit in with a certain group.

Well neither do you to be completely honest.

And no one called you a hipster. But you really want to put on this image of yourself being a hipster. You really want to be viewed as hip. You're just a fat fuck living in Austin yet taking in none of the good times to be had there all the while so badly wanting yourself to be portrayed as a trendy individual.

The only thing I might be able to add to the discussion at hand (the original one, that is) is that I was initially surprised at how the first MGMT album was assimilated into the general mainstream. In the pre-internet days this would not have happened.

I think the complaint that Banana raised
Quote:
They decidedly went away from that sound and went towards a more psychedelic experimental sound knowing it would greatly diminish their popularity and only allow them a small niche audience.
was not done consciously. Sure, they felt some crossover appeal early on but it simply wasn't who they were. They were never that kind of band to begin with.

And if it was a conscious decision to make more abstract music then they were simply trying to further the general knowledge of a mainstream audience. Nothing wrong with that. Don't blame the fame.

Kudos to any mainstream indie act not towing the party line.

Personally I never listened to anything past the first album because I was expecting "Eclectric Feel x2" which for me had been played the fuck out.

I read an article the other day about how metal guys hate on Deafheaven and call it hipster metal and make fun of the guy's haircut and it all just seems so silly.

np: George Benson "In Flight" - purchase price $1

I can't help but wonder if this record came out recently if I would have different thoughts about it simply based on "what people are saying about it" or "how it fits into the scheme of things".

On one hand I can see where they are coming from. Genres like Jazz, Bluegrass, or Metal have such distinct lineages and purist followings I don't see Deafheaven following or coming from any of them (in metal).

But on the other hand rock and roll is such a dogshit mutt of a genre it's impossible to describe without talking about any other sort of pedigreed genre. It's like when the jazz purists got super uptight about reviewers calling Kid A "free jazz".

So like, compared to Chuck Berry, Deafheaven is metal as fuck but compared to real metal Deafheaven is just super heavy rock and roll. IDK. Who cares?

I imagine it was like that in the early 90s when all the hardcore industrial dudes got SUPER pissed at NIN because they were described by critics and children as "industrial" and could buy their t-shirts at the mall hahahaha.

This is rich.

Banana was right when he called you out: you beat your chest and stomp your feet louder than anybody around here when it comes to music. Music, dude.

How would I know it was shitty without actually listening to it? I knew going in everyone was going to shit on it - I just wanted to have a more enlightened opinion about why.

Isn't this why people watch presidential debates or something?

omega concern, banana, defending the siddhartha thing with an air of if you make fun you aren't cultured

you're going down the dickhead rabbithole i guess.

yeah banana's not like a trained parrot or anything, you're right. omega makes some smart points. what an interesting thing he noticed that people tend to take exception to certain parts of arguments partially so they can dictate the terms. nobody's ever noticed that, ever. you noticed it on the internet. how fascinating.

yeah you could have watched 80s sitcoms all afternoon, but you watched a washed up fat guy do something half assed from your home, on your computer. ONCE. IN. A. LIFE. TIME.

jesus really

Friday night and a drunk Trots yelling at people and accusing them of either being "hipsters" or "posers" on a Smashing Pumpkins fan site in 2014.

I'm so ashamed of myself.

I'm not arguing with you at all. In fact the only one shouting and namecalling was you. But if you want to make this thread all about you by all means.

Time of your life is a fantastic song. never gets old. Kids is great fun to. I like that whole album quite a bit.

What a horrific, horrifically bad live act though.
