yea, i agree. kylesa is awesome.
i have yet to see them live though...and thats what usually sends me off the deep end in terms of total cd immersion. case in point: Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Baronness...all still going strong from summer show experiences. as a lol counterpoint -- you ever hear Plague Bringer? Metal band with 0 drummers. They sound ok on myspace or whatever, but playing live with a drum machine...fucking terrrible. |

i would agree with you on that point but i've heard a few people say that Genghis Tron slay pretty hard live.

i've heard the same thing actually. re: GT being badass live. but i thought they were more industrial than metal? maybe i'm wrong. or maybe its bullshit genre labels at play again. i remember hearing more ministry-style drumming in the stuff i heard (no sound right now so i can't check myspace).
all i know is pre-recorded "metal drums" sounded awful when I saw Plague Bringer open for Russian Circles. the double bass drum action, and the cymbal crashes especially, didn't come across as well without any actual emotion behind them. |

sounds like they were using a shitty drum machine if it sounded all fake and crappy. Drumkit From Hell is designed to give you proper sounding metal drums. It was made in collaboration with the dudes from Meshuggah (they used it on Catch Thirty-Three and i had know idea till i read it on wiki) and is the weapon of choice for GT, Agoraphobic Nosebleed etc. etc.

the remastered version of Nothing is so much better than the original. They only had a day to master the guitars the first time and it really shows in the re-release. Fucking amazing album.

Aw, c'mon, "If It Bleeds We Can Kill It" has great thrash riffs and some awesome vocals. And the Arnold guy is spot on. It's good thrash, guitar solos in every tune, lots of singalongs and it's funny. You have to at least get a smile out of their cover of Jingle Bells (Come on, fatso Claus. It's time to get in shape, you better start working out or else no more cookies for you).

seriously worth it. Just listen to the opening riff of Stengah on both versions and you'll see what i mean. Also it has a few extra guitar parts here and there and Obsidian is like twice as long at the end. |

I'm not entirely sure what to think of it yet, although some of it sounds pretty awesome, the general sound has changed quite a lot. have to get used to that. especially with all the guest performances and ballads (wtf) at the end!

I was definitely startled by it, but it's just as amazing as i'd come to expect. Kurts riffs seem a lot more...playful? I dunno, it just feels less angsty than the other records, even if its still just as brutal. Axe To Fall, Worms Will Feed and Cruel Bloom are my standouts so far. Ben Koller delivers a pretty brutal performance too

I’m enjoying We Butter the Bread With Butter and Lye By Mistake a lot lately.
I always get off on things like I Set My Friends On Fire, Older Horse the band stuff. I’m listening to the Imperial EP a lot, but really like the ‘We Sail At Dawn’ album bunches too lately. Yes Sir! Mister Machine EP is incredible. Foxy Shazam, does that count? I’m going to make it count. Does Gallows count? Probably not. And He Is Legend is always good. Heavy Heavy Low Low, Duck Duck Goose, Oceano, new Opeth, Chariot, the Critical Meat album from You Slut! is alright too. I don’t know, I’m just thinking of my current rotation of mix CD’s in the car. And the new Fall of Troy, but it probably doesn’t count either. |

I'm not too familiar with a lot of metal, however, I really dig The Sword, Baroness, Pelican, Kylesa, and Harvey Milk. Where should I go from here?

Kylesa's static Tensions is pretty fucking cool.

But seriously, Axe To Fall is my pick for record of the year. Everybody should give it a spin before it causes some 2012 The Movie style shit to go down and you're caught unawares.

To confirm Trots' stereotype of me: I don't like it. After Worms Will Feed the songs are dull, with an exception here and there. The riffs are far too easy for Converge, it's like anyone could have written them. Also the stronger songs aren't as good as on the last three albums. All these metal bands that I once loved made bad/mediocre albums this year. Mastodon, Isis, Pelican, and now this.

Just got the new Baroness and it's getting better as it went along but I definitely expected more. Not much progression and a little too pentatonic for my tastes.

@jj fair enough. i really like the the whole straight-up "thrash" take on their sound though. Some of that stuff like "reap what you sow" is pretty dizzyingly harsh imo.
And you didn't like the last ISIS record? I thought Wavering Radiant>>>Absence Of Truth @Dogfighter: Pentatonic is just what you get with Baroness though. I really like 'steel that sleeps the eye' into the next track. It's like if Fleet Foxes ruled. |
