Not doubting what you said re: D'arcy and bass lessons, but Billy also had a flair for being an over dramatic asshole his whole career, and I sincerely doubt he would have actually fired her. Fact is, Billy has said numerous times (particularly when the band broke up but every so often in more recent years) that the worst mistake he ever made was keeping the band going after Jimmy's drug bust and destroying the integrity of the classic lineup. He's said that the smart thing would have been to lay low and decide whether or not Jimmy could actually get his shit together. They soldiered on in 1996 because managers convinced them it was the way to go, and in 1999/2000 because there was a definite "end" in sight.
Even a few years ago, when an interviewer asked him if this was the best lineup of the band, he was forthright in stating it will never be the same as the classic four (I specifically remember that interview because it was a surprisingly humble answer from Billy).
