Can someone tell Billy that he doesn't have to sound different from the Pumpkins?
I mean, since post-MCIS, he's been trying to sound 'different' from previous work (starting with Adore). And since Adore basically every album was a disappointment.
I don't have a problem with songs that sound like the Pumpkins. R.E.M., U2, .... also still exist and are still making the same music as they did years ago. So why does he have to try to sound different? He doesn't have to for me. Since Adore, there are still separate songs on every album which I like very much (except on MSOTS), but talking about the entire album, they simply don't have the same quality anymore like they used to have in the good old days. |

Okay, I know I don't have to respond to this, but seriously, go take out your copy of Gish, and Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie, and your gonna tell me they sound alike. Most would say not quite the drastic jump, but to me, I would say the biggest change of style was between Gish and SD. I mean, on Mellon Collie, you see alot of cues showing what would lead to Adore, musically. He began using drum machines and synth patches, songs based off of an acoustic guitar and piano, mellow ballads. I think really, with the exception of TFE, Billy simply makes the music he is feeling at the time.
Also, REM and U2 are both bands that have grown so stagnant that most people don't listen anymore. |

The pumpkins always did stuff that sounds completely different, they were one of the only bands that really shattered notions of genre imho. |

The best artists always like to change their sound and style. God forbid Billy for actually trying to do something different. Adore is a beautiful album and how anyone can say Machina is a dissapointment is beyond me.

The thing about melloncollie is that it touches on so many different styles of music from track to track. The theme of melloncollie was its great variety. However, I would say that every other album follows a sort of soundscape that is basically consistent throughout the album. (This was a lot less aparent in siamese dream than in albums like adore and machina (and now thefutureembrace).

And mentioning U2 is a really bad example. This band really had drastic changes to their style throughout their career...

good alternative bands have to be progressive and evolve.
That's one of the reasons a band like oasis has a short lifespan and a band like radiohead has a long one. Billy realizes this, he's said many times in interviews that he's only interested in moving forward, not 'rehashing' the same type of material, which is a good attitude to have. But in being progressive you're meant to be treading new ground. But Billy isn't creative enough to do that, he tosses out this 80s style electronica and thinks he's embracing the future. |
