Agreed. Hydration is so important Billy kicked a band off a tour for mistakenly drinking from Bill's water bottle.

his guitar work with zwan was top notch.. he was also doing some terrific work in the zeitgeist era, specifically the 2008 tour.

But as far as pumpkins songs go, Soma, Hummer ending, Aeroplane Flies High, HINW, Cherub Rock are my favorites.

also, his solo in this particular performance is one of my all time favorite solos anywhere--

I feel like it's almost impossible to choose his best one from a live performance--they just played so many shows.

Album-wise, for me, I supposed it'd be one of the following:

Quiet
Soma
Song for a Son
Tarantula
Bury Me
I of the Mourning

Ooh I got a good one: Love!! And it's not just the solo but the way that middle eight leads into it and then later billy sings along with the guitar. Fuck yeah!

this is probably the answer for me too

+ hummer

what's for sure is, his only solos that i ever genuinely liked were on SD. they became very rare after that. SD is the only period in his career where he truly put in the effort to write structured solos that take you from A to B emotionally, rather than just make some atonal guitar noise for a few bars.

if there's one thing SP2 has been good for, it's hearing Bill revisiting & reinterpreting that perfect solo tone he'd kinda been shying away from since SD (at least on the records)

the lead sounds coming out of his guitar on Zeitgeist & Oceania, no matter the quality of the song they were supporting, were pretty impeccable

there are tons of leads in Ruby, that's sort of different though, it's not one isolated sculpted solo, it's more like the whole song is a sculpture of leads

guitar solos aren't sculpted or structured

ask any recording artist from the 80s or prior or listen to any SP solo live

i remember some early BC interview and he says solos are a "burst of freedom" from the limitations of the structure of the song or something similar, which is a common sentiment regarding lead guitar.

regarding multiple takes, you'll never get the same solo twice

billy's best solo is sitting in a can. some say it's the best solo they heard in years.

there does seem to be a vague structure to some of his SD-era solos tho
something like Quiet is pretty much different every time, but there are these "hooks" in stuff like the Cherub Rock & Geek solos which recur nearly every time he plays it

I think I read that he was faking it for the MTV cameras. It's a prop guitar he's using, JC's using a different reso head on his kick drum; it's all fake, man. He just wanted to look like a crazy rockstar for the publicity

that's just not true, almost all of the SD songs have solos that are played nearly note for note live.
