how ironic that monty would go and post this on his website soon after criticizing this as "old news"

I'm not sure what's funnier. The fact that this playlist is titled "Songs for Growth and Transformation" and consists of a bunch of generic hard rock songs, or the idea that because of Billy Corgan, Monte is probably listening to Megadeth and Motorhead for the first time.

I bet you Billy can't name 10 successful rock acts from 2000 to today. That dude is stuck in 1979.

I've always been surprised that I love SP so much because the influences have never done anything for me. Seriously that list is terrible (IMO).

There are some good songs on the list, but there are also some shit ones. Hard rock and heavy metal are only one sector of the Pumpkins foundation though. The list could as easily be filled with post-punk and goth songs, or early alternative and shoegaze, or 60s and 70s psychedelia and singer/songwriter music, or Boston and the Beatles

I think probably one of the biggest reasons the band is completely stuck sonically and unable to do anything interesting is that Corgan has just become like someone's old dad that believes there was no good music made after the 90s. It seems to me that bands which have successful careers over long periods of time are the best at keeping up with the zeitgeist and incorporating contemporary influences.

he's being obtuse though because the music he makes doesn't generally sound like that

either that or he's turned his back on MBV and pixies and shit because he wants to be a rock bro

that could be possible, like he's trying to assert his manly rock cred

yeah, exactly. at this point Corgan hasn't introduced anything significantly new to his sound since the Zwan days.

well, TFE is completely different from anything else he has done, but he also ditched that sound after the tour was finished and has not touched on it again except in fleeting moments (the lead guitar in Stellar)

Yeah, I'd agree that Corgan's musical influences are not particularly obvious in his own music given the dichotomy between what he actually plays vs. what ends up on lists like this. There are many, many bands where you could listen to them and check off an influence list and it would be completely accurate to the band's own list (you know, the one they put at the bottom of their "looking for a drummer" ads that end up on music store bulletin boards) give or take a couple of random bands you've never heard of.

no, they are incredibly obvious but i think he went to war with hipsters at some point in the 00s so he's now going to pretend he didn't have a great big stiffy for MBV
