Default Cotillions Just Isn't For Me

As someone that generally falls into the WPC logic of, "Ahead of its time," I just don't see this future for Cotillions. I've given it two go's and it's a no from me, dog.

You have good taste. It's terrible.

Doesn't Cotillions mean formal balls?

It’s the most mundane and bland thing Bobo has ever released. I couldn’t tell you one melody from it.

I knew from the second I put this album on that it was the worst piece of shit I've ever listened to. Good thing I torrented the album. It's not even worth 1c

Aside from a handful of tracks, maybe two or three, it’s the least compelling work he’s ever done. It’s just there existing when it should be on a shelf.

Scatter me out on the prairie
Western gales supine the gray

Not that this matters
It's not that it's worn
Or threadbare and battered

And the sun must rise
And the sun must rise

Custer sleeps with ball and scythe
A feather on his right
It's writ in James repent or die
For Enoch chains his scribes

Not that this matters
It's not that it's worn
Or threadbare and battered

And the sun must rise on the valley
And the foolish night will lead

Morning comes with death approaching
Echoes pierce to flit thine eye

Sweet but placed, I'm gaunt with age
Slayers mourn but God confides

Not that this matters
It's not that it's worn
Or threadbare and tattered
And the sun must rise

Custer sleeps with bell and bride
His brother by his side
A pathway horse will fly and fly
For a stage-lit night on fire

Morning comes with death approaching
Echoes pierce to flit thine eye

Not that this matters
Or not that it's worn

Cotillions is like if you stretched Ogilala for twice as long, and removed all the hooks.

One or two ok songs, but I don't think I've made it all the way through yet.

I really enjoyed Ogilala.

i think i listened to maybe the first 3 off this or something, I just remember feeling like Netpho's initial response was overwhelmingly positive for it

come to think of it we've been pretty warm to most Bill's last few releases in the initial roll-out, Pumpkins or otherwise. Silvery Sometimes was another big "they're back!" moment, I feel like. and what has it come to now, other than an occasional memey mention of Meadow Goats?

Title track's really, really fucking good. I also like Coliseum and Neptulius.

That's about all I can remember. Ogilala was way better.

I like it but it's not as good as Ogilala (which is near SP1 quality for me).

I feel like Ogilala is a "Get Back" type album, and a pretty successful one. He couldn't rely on big arrangements or studio magic so had to make sure the songs were good.

"Back to basics" albums with Rick Rubin are a bit of a cliche at this point but they seem to work? Fans don't rate the guy but I'm glad that there's someone out there with enough respect in the industry to tell people like WPC "JUST WRITE GOOD SONGS". His production style is basic but that's the whole point.

With Cotillions it's like he thought the songwriting "problem" was solved. Whatever he did with Ogilala should be an ongoing process. It didn't cure him of lousy songwriting, it only proved that he can write good songs if he really tries. Instead he went back to relying on arrangements and studio magic.. but frustratingly not enough to make Cotillions a legitimately interesting sounding album outside of a few notable tracks like the title track and Jubilee.

I like Fragile, The Spark

I think between the two albums, I could edit out one decent 40mins sequence.
some of the songs from both have been forgettable, but I'm not ready to say they're trash.

this is Corgans current operating mode. Make the current album worse than the last so that fans can say the previous one was "better".

he's been doing it since zwan. "machina was better"

It seems around Machina his lyrics started becoming incomprehensible early 19th century dictionary-speak, even though there's still some good stuff on there.

I should of framed my distaste in another way. Billy is and always will be an incredible musician. It's not that the songs are bad... it's just the soft acoustic, twangy, south west vibe. There's other artists I can go to for that, and it's not Billy.

And, yes, one or two of these songs may have been better fillers for Ogilala. Guess what I'm getting at is Cotillions lacks consistent melody.

Ogilala sounds original. Cotillions sounds copied. Maybe it's the piano. IDK.

Didn't listen through it once, and to be honest, never had the intention to. I don't like his vocal style. My impression was that the songs themselves were okay. With a different arrangement or even just different vocals I could have dug it.

It's not that I can't enjoy this style of music. Father John Misty, or some of Gaz Coombes' (Supergrass) solo stuff is in a similar vein. Just done better.

I once had the feeling that no matter what Bill did, it would be worth listening to. Was I wrong. It's been 13 years since I sincerely enjoyed one of his albums (I liked Zeitgeist for all its faults).
