probably old news alert, but this app is sort of freaking me out and making me wonder how long it will take before the third world war is gonna start
it's just weird how most things can be recognized by software. it's not always right, but surely we're getting there for instance my cat is 75% Siberian and looks like it, but the app always makes a Himalayan of him. Close enough though if you have, for instance, a simple drawing of an ant, it will recognize it as an ant don't ask me exactly how but in the end we are all certainly doomed |

machine learning. i learned about it in cognition class. it's really fascinating and yes the possibilities are pretty staggering. this is how it works, in a nutshell. for example, they are using it to try to take DNA profiles and come up with composites of how someone looks.
so first what happens is they give it a ton of data. millions of dna profiles matched to pictures of people. then it gives it a DNA profile and says, what does this person look like? the machine returns a picture that is mostly wrong, and the program is told what it got wrong and what it got right. this happens and over and over until the machine gets really good at it, and starts getting most things right. so at this point, if it can predict from DNA profiles how people look with people we do have pictures of, doesn't it make sense that it can do it with people we don't have pictures of? the answer is yes, and in forensic applications it's been fairly good at it. imagine it taking the DNA of a murder suspect and coming up with a composite of what he or she looks like. or a bone of a john doe, to identify them that is a fairly complicated application. ants are child play. you know when you have to tell google or whatever which frames of this picture have a car in it, to prove you're not a machine? you're teaching it what a car looks like. |

it's certainly not perfect and it can't do stuff like hair styles and weight (to a lesser extent), but you can use other clues for that (how old the person is, common hairstyles of a certain area). here's some examples.
https://snapshot.parabon-nanolabs.com/posters these are actual perps and john/jane does. in some cases they have different examples of facial hair and hairstyle |
