That's actually a pretty spot-on review from Pitchfork.

"That focus can be a revelation for an iconic presence like Cash or Neil Diamond, but Corgan’s presence has never been his draw. Smashing Pumpkins’ hook was the spectacle—the guitars, the fury, the sensory wonder—not the adenoidal outcast at the center of it all"

"And so Ogilala holes up listeners for 40 drumless minutes in close proximity to a voice that even diehards can only tolerate so much of. “Take me as I am,” Corgan sings over strummed guitars and faint washes of synths on “The Spaniards,” one of the record’s many confessional songs that doesn’t actually confess anything. "

That's one of my points of contention with the album too. It's like the albums supposed to be some deep statement, but he's not really saying much of anything.

"The album really should be more interesting than this, because Billy Corgan, for better or worse, is more interesting than this."

Couldn't sum it up any better myself.

That's total fucking bullshit. That awesome dark romantic melancholy vibe that suffused classic tsp: billy corgan like it or not.

i think he was just referring to the one reviewer, who insinuated that everything TSP did after Zeitgeist was better than Zeitgeist

yeah the album isn't deep whatsoever, i dont think anyone on here was arguing that it is. compared to monuments though it's like the atlantic ocean

Just for comparison...

TFE charted at #31
Zeitgeist charted at #2
Oceania charted at #4
Monuments charted #33
Ogilala charted #183

A shame I guess because Ogilala is by some distance the best of these five albums.

I was really prepared for the worst in this performance, but I actually enjoyed it. Having a second guitarist allowed Corgan to do some lead work, which sounded nice. I would actually prefer more arrangements similar to this on the tour.

I just hate that song. The chorus is a complete dud. I think it's the worst on the album, and I feel really positive about the album overall.

Zowie or The Processional would've been better.

It's kind of a nice moment when the crowd hears that familiar Corgan voice and gets amped. I wonder if they were bummed at the next 3 1/2 minutes.

I'm surprised at how good the production was for this. He's got like, audience members surrounding him for those intimate moodz.
