Yeah I agree with you a lot. It feels really disjointed and like it was trying way too hard to be 'unexpected' but at the detriment of telling a good story.

Also that beginning bit just went on too long. General Hugs was just turned into a huge bumbling idiot in this movie and I don't like that. I like my space nazi generals menacing and composed thank you very much.

I have a LOT of thoughts on this and I think I need to see it a second time before I can come to any concrete conclusions. I steered completely away from spoilers and even speculation on this one, but it still managed to be... well, not the movie I was expecting.

The story seemed like a strange detour from TFA, which built a lot of momentum and seemed to set up a lot of things to happen later. TLJ doesn't really honor any of that, instead trying too hard to break the formula IMO and this actually winds up being more detrimental than TFA attempting to copy the formula exactly. The story itself makes no sense and maybe that's just Star Wars but... we seemingly pick up right after TFA ends. Somehow the First Order has conquered the entire galaxy from the New Republic in this time by blowing up one planet. Then we get what we are told is an 18 hour chase sequence... the first order couldn't have called backup to head off the resistance? even though they control the whole galaxy? it just doesn't make sense.

my favorite part of the movie was Mark Hamill. I liked the new Luke for the most part, and I thought it made sense that he had really changed. In some ways he seems to have reverted to his younger self, before the calm composed spiritual figure we see in ROTJ. I really liked the development between him and Rey as well. There were some moments where his character didn't work (like trying to kill Ben Solo in the flashback) but my biggest complaint about this is that they ended his story and squandered an opportunity for him to play an active role in the last movie when he was basically what saved this one from being a C instead of a B, IMO. Yoda cameo was done well and they made him more similar to original Yoda than prequel Yoda which was nice.

Other things: I thought the Snoke reveal and downfall was pretty well done, and I appreciated how the film subverted waiting until the end of the last film to reveal the BIG bad guy. Also interesting that Kylo Ren could not be turned and does seem to be the top evil dude at this point. Finn and Rey's relationship was 100% wasted in this movie after being a high point in TFA. This movie was very weak on setting. The salt planet at the end was awesome, but that was the only point in which I felt the classic Star Wars magic in terms of exploring this universe. The European micro-state planet was cool but that entire part of the plot was totally unnecessary and a distraction to what else was happening, especially since it wound up not being important to the plot. They tried to show a darker side to Po and Finn I think but I'm not sure what the message was here, because Po essentially got the Resistance decimated. If they had trusted Leia's plan from the beginning, the cloaked ships would have reached the planet undetected and everyone would have lived. Instead we got 1/3 of the entire movie length dedicated to a dead end plot line that just complicated things.

Frustratingly, I feel that there is a solid A movie in here somewhere, but the pacing, editing, and a few extremely dumb plot decisions really detract from the potential. This almost felt like it was what should happen off-screen in between episodes 7 and 8. The movie is also more Disneyfied than TFA. There are some very awkward attempts at humor in inappropriate moments that really pissed me off (can you imagine in the original trilogy, an x-wing fighter pilot trolling the commander of a star destroyer fleet? it was embarrassingly ridiculous to me). And it also had that Disney quality of not being able to sustain a dramatic or serious or grim moment without having to throw in some out of place pop culture type joke or quip.
I agree with about 95% of this. I laughed at the trolling Hux bit though. He was never more than a cartoon anyway...far from menacing.

I'm not sure where they could go with Ep. 9. Han is dead, Carrie Fisher is dead IRL and Luke is (probably) a Force ghost. That leaves us with...Rey vs. Kylo, neither of whom have much mystique left in their character after Ep 8. While I enjoyed their dynamic in Ep. 8 a lot, IDK if that alone can sustain the last movie in the trilogy.

Yep, and whereas TFA seemed to do a lot of set up for this and the next movie, this movie did basically nothing to set up what is coming next.

I thought the Rey/Kylo Ren connection was kind of interesting in TLJ, but I thought the way their mental link was done was pretty cheesy and stupid. Reminded me of Harry Potter and Voldemort being mentally linked.

THAT'S what they do with one of the best Stephen King novels ever. Sigh. Don't see what all the hype is about.

The last good movie I saw, based on a Stephen King book, was Misery.

I liked IT thought it was pretty scary and Pennywise was oddly alluring.

it's an okay standalone film, but compared to the book, it's not very good.

Samurai Champloo Season 2

Was a little disappointed that Mugen and Jin didn't both die protecting Fuu and the overall plot was pretty weak but still was very entertaining and the animation was KILLER.

Next up: Cowboy Bebop

the new IT.

some scenes too dark because it was streamed but mostly i was very scared and even turned on the light in the hallway when i went to pee. but i did not believe those little boys were the type to use curse words. it sounded awkward coming out of them.

they tried to mix stand by me with IT.

Apparently some.company has the movie rights to the Left Hand of Darkness. I am sure they will ruin it.

"The unknown, the unforetold, the unproven, that is what life is based on. Ignorance is the ground of thought. Unproof is the ground of action... what is known? What is sure, predictable, inevitable--the one certain thing you know concerning your future and mine? That we shall die. There's really only one question that can be answered and we already know the answer...

The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty: not knowing what comes next."
