people will fuck this place up so bad that our species probably won't last much longer. 7,000,000,000 greedy people and counting...

the distance between stars is likely prohibitive to any meaningful attempt at galactic colonization

besides that.. due to expansion the universe will eventually become devoid of stars and planets and it will one day contain nothing but radiation. at that point, many billions of years from now, no life will exist anywhere in the Universe. And nothing anybody did on Earth will mean a god damn.

and then the Universe will exist for eternity as a lifeless ever expanding void

Happy Easter!

I think the exact time frame is still in dispute. It will continue to increase in intensity, but it's likely that life could exist here for well over another billion hears. What I was referring to was the point when the sun will actually engulf the earth.

whatever the exact time frame, it is going to happen.

I believe it's naturally human to seek validation, comfort and security and because we have the ability to imagine a creator it seems like a natural tendency to seek that validation in a creator. I could reason the absence of a creator if I were called on it-speaking as an atheist myself-but I wouldn't employ the 'we are all born atheists' defense in explaining my stance. It seems to ignore a fundamental human element to religion/faith.

Evolutionary scientists are saying now that religion played a very significant part in our survival as a species.

It's kind of the reason I roll my eyes in threads like these. It's low hanging fruit to pick on the technicalities of biblical myths. People respond to religion for deeper and more fundamental reasons.

but newborns probably aren't seeking that validation. but newborns aren't asserting the absence of a deity either. it's a dumb conversation all around, basically.

and i think you and trots are for some reason underestimating the poisonous nature of religion in the world. historically and in the present. it's not about elitism.

this human nature you speak of is a condition of environment. my suggestion isn't neglecting the human element of religion, just simply that a newborn baby isn't going to have a belief in god.

humanity as a whole is still predominantly religious, so to go against that is obviously going to be against 'human nature'. but we aren't predestined at birth to believe in a god. if you locked a baby in a room at birth, it would never develop the brainpower to even grasp the concept of god, let alone create one on its own to believe in.

if you're talking to me, i'm more than willing to be enlightened on the topic.

the fact that it played a role in our evolution and that people might be predisposed to it really doesn't change much about what i'm saying as far as i can tell

You know the rule that says 90% of everything is crap? This applies to people and their beliefs.

You're taking me to literally. A baby right out the womb isn't going to know *anything* obviously, but when left to it's own faculty, without instruction, is going to arrive at it's own instincts, looking for god as one of them. That's what the study is hinting at. I think you're seeing this as a threat to atheism. It's not. Atheism is a reasoned response to this condition.

And acknowledging as much has nothing to do with knowing the atrocities done in religions name so I don't know why eulogy brought that up other than to prove trots point about swinging your dick around
