Default Sxsw 2006

I just made my hotel reservations for March 15-19 in Austin, TX for SXSW. If you need help with finding a cheap hotel in a good location PM me and i'll give you some info. This will be my 5th consecutive year attending SXSW. I'm a fucking veteran. :P

So anyway, who all is attending this year? Any out of towners coming this year? In the past I've met up with beef curtains, Injektilo, & Mason for a part or all of SXSW.

Okay now to the part where I list all the bands that are playing and I ask for recommendations for maybe some of the up and coming good but as of yet unknown bands. I'm mostly into pop rock, twee, shoegaze, space rock, but i'm also breaking out of the that rigid mold in some ways so don't hesistate to suggest something that doesn't adhere to those confines.

i'll look through the list properly tomorrow but right now i'll suggest from the new zealand bands attending, the bats, the brunettes and chris knox.

honestly if you ever only ever listen to one thing i say let it be this, go see chrix knox. you'd also love the bats as well. and the brunettes.

I don't know what my plans are, Tony. I really want to go but right now I'm broke and I'm going to have to figure out how I'm going to get there and how long I can stay/how I can get home. I can probably snag a ride with Thomas or some other friend I make between now and then, or I could talk someone at the hostel into driving there some night, because I can't afford to go any other way. I bet I'll get to go, but if I don't, then it'll be okay. Anyway, I also wouldn't mind checking out any cool bands, including but not limited to:

Califone (Chicago IL)
Animal Collective (Baltimore NY)
Black Heart Procession (San Diego CA)
Cat Power(Atlanta GA)
Headphones (Seattle WA)
Damien Jurado (Seattle WA)
Kaki King (New York NY)
Metric (Toronto ON)
Minus the Bear (Seattle WA)
Beth Orton (London UK)
Peaches (Berlin GERMANY)
The Secret Machines (New York NY)
The Whigs (Athens GA)

Well Liz if you do attend I'd definitely be up for meeting up with you at some point. In fact we'll probably be at some of the same shows if you do go since I see a few bands/artists on your list that I have plans of checking out such as Animal Collective, Cat Power, Kaki King, The Secret Machines as well as maybe Peaches. I'd offer you to stay with us at our hotel but right now I'm not sure if its going to be 2 or 4 of us going. I'll keep you informed if space becomes available. OH and you might also want to check out the message boards on the SXSW.com website. Usually people living in Austin will offer their houses to people coming from out of the city for free or sometimes for a price cheaper than hotels. As far as expenses go (you said you were broke)...you have to factor in that the wristbands (which give you access to all venues for the four evenings) are usually around the $120-$140 range for the first and second batches. Then you have to factor in food expenses for four days. Overall the experience is amazing though. It could even be one of those lame Mastercard commercials. Hotel for SXSW = $270. Wristband for SXSW = $120. Spending four evenings running around Austin going from venue to venue seeing amazing bands = PRICELESS. Sometimes you don't get into shows that you might want to get into though. At last year's SXSW we didn't get to see LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A, The Futureheads, and The Go! Team. I don't tell you this to bring you down but I want you to know the reality of the event if you do decide to come. If you have any questions PM me. Or my yahoo messenger name is in my profile as well.

i'm going to do everything in my power to *NOT* miss them this year.
the sad part about sxsw is that you never get to see everything you want to.
take my list for example...i think i counted 37 bands that i listed....i'll probably only get to see 10 to 15 of them at the most. some of them will be playing at the same time as another band i want to see...and some of them i won't be able to get into because of the full venue occupancy.

hey tony, i could probably find all this out online, but can you buy single-show tickets and be guaranteed into the venue? and for a band like animal collective is there a huge line where you'd have to sit all day for a chance to get in? if you'd rather me look online, just say so.

Hey Tony, do you ever go to Austin City Limits??? Is it generally pretty lame?

My future mother in law lives in Austin - so there's a good chance we'll be down for either Austin City Limits this year or SXSW next year

i'm glad you asked me this question before looking online for an answer because this would be really hard to find online.
yes it is possible to pay for shows individually HOWEVER venues usually allot a very small quota number of tickets that way...maybe 50 in some cases. sxsw works in a heirarchial form as a sort of totem pole. at the top of the totem pole you have people who purchase sxsw badges (music badge costs $525). the badge people get first chance of getting into a venue but even their entrance isn't guaranteed. the second people on the totem pole are the people who purchase wristbands. the wristbands cost $120 usually and they get the second chance of getting in after badge people but even their entrance still isn't guaranteed. at the bottom of the totem pole are the pay individually per show people. there is a chance like i said because most venues will allot some number of tickets for people paying cash and each show might cost you about $20 bucks. for a band like animal collective who have become super popular among the indie community it seems like a big risk for me personally for you to plan on paying cash for that show. it seems possible but yeah you'd probably have to be there pretty early and wait a while in line. you might even have better odds of getting in than some wristband people since i think so many badge and wristband people will go because of the buzz around animal collective that it might mean a lot of those people don't get in either. i know that sounds lik the complete opposite of what i've been telling you but for some shows it just works out that way...
you just never really know how some things are going to go at sxsw.

I'm not that experienced with the Austin City Limits festival so take what I say with a grain of salt. I've only done ACL one year and only for two out of the three days. It was dreadfully hot (you lived in Houston so you know how hot Texas weather can be) and I was sweating and there were swarms of people and I just generally didn't feel comfortable enough to have a good time. My friends and I didn't even attempt to get anywhere near the stage because of how many people there were so we heard some bands from pretty far away. The sound was still sort of good but I couldn't see any of the actual bandmembers well at all. The bands that are selected to play ACL are usually more Adult Contemporary and Country-ish than the more Indie acts selected to play at SXSW *however* just recently the bands selected to play at ACL are starting to get a little more indie (bands like The Arcade Fire, M83 & Tortoise played last year's ACL).
If I remember correctly you attended Coachella a year or two ago so if you enjoyed that this seems to be Texas's Countrier version of that so you might enjoy this one too. Although I hear California doesn't suffer from such harsh humidity as we do...although I don't know if thats true or not.
If all goes well I'm planning to move back to Austin next year so maybe we can meet up again when you visit your future mother in law.

I'll be there but I have to work part of it (in order to get my VIP pass thingy)

I worked last year and it was worth it in the long run.

Anywho we should do a netphoria meet up one of the days for sure.

from the british folks you possibly may not have heard of you might want to check out the following if there's nothing pressing at the same time. clor, the crimea, the duke spirit, richard hawley. i recognise a bunch of the other britsh bands and could tell you which are (IMO) any good at what they do but they are the four i'd personally go see outside of the obvious (mogwai etc, bands you know of for sure) i bought a single by forward russia last week but haven't played it yet. i've heard all good stuff about them and they're from just down the road from me. i'll let you know if it's especially good stuff
