tool is my band. the only stuff i really really like by NIN is everything from The Fragile and on... everything before the fragile i don't care for, but everything by tool is master work.

and here are the awards (comparing the two bands, of course):
lyrics - Tool music - Tool vocal ability - Tool concerts - Tool choice in opening bands - this one would belong to Tool, except they made the mistake of picking tricky and king crimson on some of their recent tours... and no amount of Tomahawk/Fantomas/Meshuggah is gonna take that away. t-shirts - Tool album covers - Tool humor - Tool grand prize super-great-fantastic-happy-time winners: TOOL

Both NIN and Tool are equally good in their own right. Trent Reznor has always been really good at creating these vivid soundscapes, and that's pretty much the only appeal I find in them anymore. The mostly simplistic melodies annoy me, as do the lyrics which I find to be poorly manufactured and trite.
Tool, however, has an amazing lyricist, an amazing vocalist and an amazing (and tasteful!) drummer. They're great songwriters considering the limits that their genre puts on them. So...tool. |

tool is way better.
i just can't get into NIN that much... they have songs i like, (hurt... we're in this together... perfect drug). yet several NIN songs just seem like cheesy electronic bullshit that came out of trent's ass. Trent seems to do really cool things and then really lame things. tool is all good, all the time |
