The mandate is def a conservative idea stemming from the personal responsibility mantra

It's probably the reason it passed

I honestly don't support legally requiring people to buy into something that profits off their misery and shouldn't exist in the first place.

I'm fine with having to pay for people without insurance via taxes

But really, if you are being fined for not having insurance, do you really believe that money you paid in goes towards medical costs?
When you look at all things that tax dollars pay for.....the country is kinda not up to party in many areas. But you know...war is expensive, clean water must be expensive, bridges getting quick fixes, government officials riding around in fancy government car, more and more lawsuit, ambulance calls for drunks, road repairs, parks, I can go on

It's not a fine. It's a tax. And yeah federal revenue is being used to administer the ACA

It's the only reason it makes financial sense. But it actually made it MORE difficult to pass, as it's the single most unpopular part of the law. Not a single conservative on Congress voted for it.

Regg is Absolutely the worst and most useless human being to post on the board this year.

not anywhere near as bad as ninsp, although you only have to feel deeply annoyed and/or offended by him about once a week when he decides to pop in and remind himself how hated he is

He made about the best choice he could have made given his position I think. There is still a small chance the GOP firewall could crack and Garland might receive a hearing as pressure intensifies in local elections. If Obama had nominated a leftist, that wouldn't be a possibility at all and he would have squandered the political capital he now holds by putting the GOP in the position of refusing to hear out a moderate. Either way, GOP candidates will suffer in some local elections because of their behavior, and some of those races are competitive. Obama has already moved SCOTUS decidedly to the left. There was no reason to ever believe he would try to replace the most insane wing nut on the Court with a leftist, and I don't understand how anyone could think that would be a politically tenable move.

Fresh red-meat news here. O still building that legacy of his:

Obama Responds To Saudi Threat To Dump Treasuries If Its Role In Sept 11 Is Probed

Quote:
Moments ago White House spokesman Josh Earnest chimed in, and validated all of those fears.

EARNEST: BILL WOULD OPEN U.S. TO GLOBAL LEGAL VULNERABILITIES
WHITE HOUSE SAYS IT IS CONFIDENT THAT SAUDIS RECOGNIZE THE SHARED INTEREST WITH THE U.S. IN PROTECTING STABILITY OF INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM
EARNEST: DON'T KNOW IF BILL WILL BE TOPIC ON OBAMA SAUDI VISIT

And the punchline:

EARNEST COMMENTS ON BILL TO ALLOW LAWSUITS BY SEPT. 11 FAMILIES
EARNEST SAYS BILL TO ALLOW LAWSUITS AGAINST SAUDI CONCERNING
EARNEST: OBAMA WOULDN'T SIGN SUE-SAUDI BILL AS DRAFTED

In short: whether due to the Saudi threat, or just because of its default position on the matter, Obama will block the Bill and no further probes into Saudi involvement in the Sept 11 tragedy will be allowed.

No to all of this

Why does Obama always start with the middle ground?

Start with someone leftist act like you are really pushing for the guy then go OKAY fine let's compromise Merrick Garland

That's if he really wants him on the bench which he really shouldn't if he's actually progressive.

I would nominate someone on the left and then go to the public and say "look how useless they are" until they cave or lose the general election anyway

yes just pushing for 100% of what you want instead of handling things with realistic political wrangling totally works, just ask the GOP

You mean the giant shift to the right

You think the Bush administration cared about negotiation

The Bush administration did not have to negotiate because 90% of Democrats were with him at the beginning.

and the Democrats have moved to the left as well, I don't really understand this amnesia where liberals believe they have always been with Bernie and it's just the GOP that has gone nuts when in reality most of them stood behind everything Clinton did in the 90s, were against gay marriage before 10 years ago, were for the drug war and tough on crime policies, etc. it's true that this exists within the larger context of America becoming deeply conservative in the post-war era, but I think it's incredibly hypocritical that everyone wants to pile on the Clintons and the establishment Dems for their bad policies in the past when the truth is almost all liberals were for all this shit while it was happening.

That's not really the point here

Conservative politicians do a much better job of representing their constituents. When I vote for a progressive candidate I expect them to adequately fight for progressive ideas but instead we get democrats that are always so eager to meet at the center right
