I'm on my third or fourth listen now. I'm digging it. The two non-Rivers songs (Thought I Knew and Cold Dark World) don't really set my world on fire, but I don't think they're terrible or anything. Everything else on there is good to great IMO. And best of all, it's not the overly safe sort of stuff they put out on Green and Make Believe. It actually sounds to me like Rivers is trying a little bit again.
I suppose I should wait until the last two songs leak before definitively ranking it, but right now my inclination that it's going to end up solidly somewhere in between Blue/Pinkerton and Green/Maladroit/MB. Time will tell I guess. |

I'm setting my lasers to suck. Every Weezer album since Pinkerton has sucked, except for Maladroit.

that link includes the remix for Automatic. hearing the "rest" of the album just makes me want the album version even more. i bet it'll be awesome. Cold Dark World is my least favorite. Brian's track is real good, but just doesn't fit. i thought i'd have a problem with the other guys singing lead. it's not like The Beach Boys after Brian lost it. all of their vocals had always been all over the place and it was always more or less similar. Brian's vocals are like a jarring difference. but i still think it's a good song. i like the feel of it. only other complaints are the bridge in Everybody Get Dangerous and the first section of Dreamin'. outside of that i, though only after one listen, and two more tracks (not counting the 6 or 7 b-sides) to hear, i'm EXTREMELY excited and pleased with the album. after only one listen it's easily leaps and bounds better than Make Beshit. oh, and there's no solos. what a fucking bummer. but at least the Weez isn't relying on them to fill up part of a song. Weezer was just one of the few bands (including TSP) that almost always had a solo in their songs. kind of makes me miss it, but i don't think it makes the songs worse. it's just that a total lack of guitar solos on the first eight tracks makes me think that they might have left them out on purpose, which i don't agree with. don't force a guitar solo into a song, but make sure to give a song what it needs.

So, is it as bad as all the kids at www.albumsix.com say it is? Hopefully it's better than Make Believe, otherwise this may be the final straw.

"The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" is great. I haven't been this excited about a Weezer song since Tired Of Sex though the "I am the greatest.." part reminds me of Why Bother a bit too much (the "We were good as married in my head.." part). CLEARLY the best song out of this patch.
Pork and Beans was alright, Everybody Get Dangerous is alright.. the rest. meh. Thought I Knew is dull as fuck, I'm afraid. |
