I feel like the way a lyric is presented can have a large effect. Like, the way it's articulated by the vocalist, the emotion within the voice, the melody, etc. "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage" is kinda a dumb line and in many contexts, I would probably think it was terrible lyric writing. There are so many ways singing "love is suicide" could turn out cringey and sound like some sophomoric scrawlings in a high-schoolers notebook.

But I dunno, Corgan made these things work and there's nothing to be embarrassed about in those songs.

Also helps if the rest of the lyrics in the songs are pretty well-written, like in "Bodies." It's not like it's an entire song worth of love being suicide. "All my blisters now revealed..." still kinda gives me chills. An awkward line or two is okay if the rest of the lines are good.

"BWBW" doesn't really have any super great lyrics, most of them being maybe just a couple notches above the "rat in a cage" thing (first verse reads like he wrote it on the spot with a rhyming dictionary, except for the fact that it doesn't even truly rhyme and just uses assonance that works well enough). But I dunno, I still rock out to this unironically and unashamed.

I think most of the lyrics are good, but it's peppered will kinda clumsy lines here and there.

I dunno, I'm biased. Pretty sure everybody thinks that the lyricist of their favourite band is a poet.
