from everything i listened to, October Rust is the only one truly top shelf album they released. but it really is top quality. i would highly recommend listening to the entire record all the way through - it's one of those. don't be deterred if you're not super buzzed by the first 3-4 songs - the entire second half of the record is fucking amazing.

Joy Division is Goth?
Is the Cure goth? I know nothing (in general and specifically about goth) |

I'd kinda think of Joy Division as a post-punk band that was kinda proto-Goth in the sense that they influenced a lot of Gothic rock and had elements of it in their sound, and the Cure as both a post-punk and Gothic rock band (first album was post-punk, then they slided into Goth, but always kinda did both), but that's just me being pedantic and the distinction doesn't matter a whole lot to me. Gothic rock is pretty much just a subgenre of post-punk, the lines are blurry as fuck, and then you have, like, deathrock and whatever and I don't even know what the difference is between that and Gothic rock (just happens to be slightly campier, like, singing about horror movies and ghouls and vampires and graveyards and shit?)
I dunno, Elphy probably knows this shit (where the fuck has he even been for the last little while?) In the end, if it sounds good, the name of the genre is "good shit." My favourite genre is "good shit." |

The full on Goth Fashion came after Joy Division though I guess It happens a lot ,but not always, that the bands that play up the fashion aspect suck and are not even playing post punk |

Went to that thing at this pub where they play Gothic rock and post-punk last night. This time, I actually went with people. Invited Elph, but he didn't come out. I think he's dead. We were supposed to wear matching leather jackets. He tried to convince me to match with his "post-punk shirt," but I couldn't, because that's not actually a thing. I just wore a "genre: other" shirt.

I have this weird thing where I don't really love genres, I like a few artists here and there of a given genre. I try to get deeper into the genre after finding a band that plays it that I dig, but find little more that interests me. I just liked the band, not the genre, I guess.
Like, my love of The Banshees compelled me to search for more good Gothic rock. What I got was a bunch of that really-'80s-sounding stuff where all of the snare drums are EQed to sound like somebody hitting a garbage bag with a stick. I guess Cocteau Twins are considered Gothic? I dunno, I don't even think of genres when listening to Cocteau Twins. Cocteau Twins is just Cocteau Twins. Liked this one Sex Gang Children album I had, even though it had some filler tracks. Have yet to go deeper into them. |

i met the Cocteau Twins in the 80s. They played a show in Detroit. I showed up 8 hrs early with my girlfriend. we walked the back door and sat in the club like we were supposed to be there. We talked briefly to Elizabeth and said hello to Robin. I couldn't believe it.
I met half of Depeche mode in the 90s. Again we showed up early and just walked into the venue, walked back stage and hung out while they did sound checks. I ended up saying Hello to Alan Wilder and Martin Gore. I met The Sugar Cubes in 88. I drove to Toronto to see them play. Showed up hours early at a club in China Town that was above a fish market. They drove up in their bus and got out and stood around on the street for an hour smoking and chatting waiting for somebody to unload gear. at the time nobody knew who they were. Birthday had just been released in the USA. They were very cool. Very funny. I wanted to hug Bjork the entire time. |
