i like the ones they did in the machina era. not as insane as the siamese dream and gish ones, but still effective. like slow dawn, SIYL, I of the mourning..

Geek USA.

But I think songs like I Am One, Soma, and Starla were best live. Billy was really spontaneous and just so creative with those songs when it came to solos.

All of them. Seriously, Corgan's ability to match solos to the emotions of a song is almost unmatched. The Here is No Why solo, The Hummer solo, Mayonaise, etc.

I just listened to this.
James' solo in the middle is wretched, almost embarassing.
Billy's solo at the end is very nice though-- I assume this is the one you were referring to.

Yeah, James' solo doesn't inspire much, but Billy's is heavenly.

Slow Dawn
Starla
Quiet
Bury Me
I Want You To Want Me
Plume
Here Is No Why
Geek USA
I Am One (ignoffo tape)
Galapogos (the slides and the fingerpicking right before the distortion comes in)
Tribute To Johnny
Rhinoceros
To Love Somebody
Jesus I/Mary Star of the Sea live version from the 'Best of CA' zwan comp)
For Martha (live lead)
Blank Page (live lead)
XYU (live feedback and tuning until the string pops)
Untitled
The Last Song (bill senior)
Glass and the Ghost Children (live lead)
All things Change
Under Your Spell
C'mon
Love
Fuck You
Christmastime (the solo really works for the song)

other solos and general lead work i really like:
tony iommi - firewall (black oblivion) feat. billyc on vox
james iha - falling
papa m - truckstop girl (how awesome), arundel (the whole song),
the crimea - opposite ends (discovered them from TFE tour, half of their album is pretty rockin')
dinosaur jr - start choppin', the lung, hide, raisans, feel the pain
built to spill - carry the zero, mess with time (from the newest album), big dipper, virginia reel around the fountain, distopian dream girl, strange, fly around my pretty little miss
juliana hatfield - when you loved me (how sweet it is), close your eyes, don't let me down (reminds me of t-rex) new waif (shake your booty to it), until tomorrow, metal fume fever, simplicity is beautiful, make it home, trying not to think about it (about jeff buckley's drowning), might be in love
john frusciante (of rhcp) - the past recedes, lever pulled (background trippy stuff), hope, time tonight (reversed guitar solo)
matthew sweet - sick of myself ('one more time')
superchunk - 1000 lbs
t-rex - jeepster, mambo sun
rilo kiley - small figures in vast a expanse
mazzy star - give you my lovin' (she doesn't do the lead work, but it's awesome)
alan jackson - the blues man
stp - the whole Tiny Music album is filled with cool lead, notably Seven Caged Tigers bad solo
cake - frank sinatra (general background guitars and lead)
cracker - big dipper (fits the song perfectly)
- never met a girl like you before
weezer - their solos are pretty good, esp from the blue album.
white zombie - any solos and riffs J. did were pure steel, including the noise buildup in el phantasmo and the chicken-run blast-o-rama,
pantera - hollow, walk
cat power - the intro to He War, and a lot of their just crazy disordered guitar from moon pix
spacehog - in the meantime
the darkness - christmastime, i believe in a thing called love
steppenwolf - the piccolo solo in wild thing, bad to the bone
pavement - killing moon
brand new sin - black and blue (just the first bend in the beginning of the solo)
the breeders - roi, roi reprise, i just wanna get along
queens of the stone age - little sister (man that little riff is damn catchy)
pixies - vamos
rem - what's the frequency kenneth (maybe tops jamesy's e-bow solos)
edwin collins - never met a girl like you before
tchaikovski - flight of the bumblebee
nirvana - cobain's solos sucked, get over it.

when i come to think of it siamese dream actually had pretty great solos altogether.
in the studio, that is.
it all really comes toppling down though when you realize billy cant even recreate it.
so in my opinion it almost doesnt count.
as a single, well recorded, well constructed, and pretty good solo, i think landslide is billy's best. or the clean\delay solo in the end of hummer
