Candyman (1992) A-

Some typical 90s clumsiness but glorious twee gothic Philip Glass soundtrack and all the best western horror tropes makes this a classic I reckon. I was surprised. This movie should have been to Phantom of the Opera what Allegro non Troppo is to Fantasia, but it was hamfisted into a Hollywood slasher in the late stages of production by nervous producers apparently (from Philip Glass's site)

Didn't realise it was Philip Glass until the opening credits rolled...would have been too young to know who he was, the last time I watched it.

rewatched a couple of 90s classics:

Sling Blade: B

there were parts that were worth of a C (all the stuff with Doyle basically) and parts worthy of an A. the main character for me is just super compelling. really some nice moments. also, damn, props to billy bob. didn't realize he wrote, directed, and starred, and if you had not told me he was the main guy i would never have guessed it

What's Eating Gilbert Grape: A

i saw this probably in like 1994 or something and was too young to really get it. this time around i could really appreciate it. found it quite moving and leo's performance really was quite something. felt it was great, captured that whole 90s movie feel really well too. i think it held up well

oh do you mean watching other movies from that era / genre?

kind of. i believe i will rewatch Life with eddie murphy and martin lawrence from 1999, not the same era exactly but i never tire of it and there are a few common elements

also i feel like rewatching beasts of the southern wild. which doesn’t have much in common with those except i think they all give me this similar sort of feeling. it’s driven in part by the scenery of those movies. but i find myself welling up with tears at various points and feel that it’s worthwhile afterwards.

one notable exception, i know in my early and mid twenties i felt like magnolia was a brilliant move and maybe 5 years ago or more i went back to rewatch it and i really did not enjoy it. it’s was too self indulgent and long and depressing.

gattaca, which i also enjoyed from that era, really help up well for me though.

any movies you’d recommend watching?

Yeah, Candyman is pretty great. Kind of cautiously looking forward to the sequel/remake-ish thing...

Last night was a double feature of The Big Lebowski (which, frankly, never gets old) and MacGruber (!). 10/10, 7/10 respectively.

I am constantly amazed at how many hilarious and/or quirky memorable moments are packed into Lebowski. I know that movie has been sort of co-opted by frat douche culture or whatever, but damn if that thing isn't some sort of accidental masterpiece.

MacGruber is probably the third best movie based on an SNL property.

Similarly, I re-watched George Romero's The Crazies yesterday morning just for shits. Somehow he really tapped into the vein of today's social media/herd mentality over four decades ago so well. Anti-science characters and their refusal to listen drive themselves off the cliff without even realizing it. All that was missing were the grocery stores and their empty shelves where toilet paper was once stocked in abundance.

A great way to start the day, for sure.

Lebowski is my second favorite film (behind Mulholland Drive). Every single scene is delightful.

The Grudge - 1/5
Such a dismal boring carcass of a movie, it fumbled every single "scare" and the story was such a non-event it was impossible to pay attention to the screen.

From What Is Before

Over five hours long and every scene is senescent. Fucking incredible.
