I'm interpreting the change to be just for this one show, so far.

There's been exceptions in the past, like the Chicago Songs show and the final show in 2000.

Audio / Sound recording was prohibited in 2000 and earlier; some close fans were invited in 2000 to patch into the soundboard, though that was unique to the situation of 2000, which included given a lot back to the fans before ending the band. I remember the full-concert FM broadcasts, the free studio releases, and the free signings and opportunities to meet them.

My thoughts exactly. If they totally bomb it could be the type of thing that goes viral.

I can't imagine there being any other reason.

Has anyone spoken to him about it last year? I believe he began to shut down Audio in 2017, though everyone I know who met him was too busy taking pictures with him so they can brag about it on social media.

Yeah, but (fortunately) people still did it anyway, and the band knew about it to some degree even if they didn't officially allow it. What I meant about the final metro show was that recording was explicitly banned for that show. I remember something about Billy maybe even preemptively sueing John Doe and Jane Doe to keep people from recording it.

I really hope he's not against recording now. I bet he just doesn't like looking out at people looking (down) at their phones.
